TLDR: IT'S OK BUT BE WARNED IT'S EXTREMELY SALTY.
Overall, first time I give this place a try, I ordered the griot plate (UE delivery) imho a bit pricy for griot but at least it's a generous portion with lots of meat / rice. The first bite is good but the more you eat you quickly realize this is way wayyyyyy too salty. There are better griot in Laval.
Traditionally and in lots of creole resto the griot meat can be very chunky pieces of fat, I don't like that so I asked for lean pieces in my order and to their credit every pieces we had were very lean which is great, only problem was they were a bit too dry, which to be fair can be expected with lean meat... not a problem usually because you pour a generous amount of sauce over it, but yeah not in this case (sauce = pure salt)
The rice is good but not the best, there is not enough beans and missing bit of flavor (do not confuse flavor with salt, there is enough salt lol).
The sauce, OH my god, I normally pour the sauce all over my griot dish, lucky I didn't do this! The sauce is basically liquid salt! You need to add a few drops here and there otherwise the saltiness will just overpower everything. It felt more like a peppery sauce rather than traditional griot sauce...
The plantain banana, is, ok, not great, I get it though, it's not easy to get crispy plantain on take out, and some people like it a bit mushy like that, but I prefer thinner cuts for crispier plantains... I've yet to find a restaurant that make really good plantains though this is a problem with all creole place I tried so far.
The macaroni side dish is just a useless distraction imho, I don't know why lots of creole place like to add this as a side, it's always mediocre at best, simply not needed.
I understand restaurants like to add a bit extra salt to enhance flavors but this is ridiculous... Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it was a mistake as other people have also commented how the food is too salty. This is unfortunate, if you've had real griot before, you know this dish is already delicious full of flavor, you really don't need this much...
Read moreReally tasty food! Tried it twice now.
The chicken plate comes with a good portion of rice, a little macaroni salad and two plantain pieces. It was not only good, especially the chicken and gravy, but really great value.
I also ordered chicken wings that were equally good, came with a bbq sauce that had a tiny little kick to it (very very mild, I'm sure most would not consider spicy lol).
And finally, I left the best for last: the Haitian beef patties. Freakin' DELICIOUS. Admittedly the first time I try Haitian beef paties but oh my god were they good! The pastry was so fresh and the bite just melts in your mouth. In fact, in my order today, I paid for 2 orders of patties (they come in 2's so I should have gotten 4 in total) but they forgot to give me 1 order, but I was totally fine with it because the 2 I did eat were worth the price of double if not more!
Sorry for the long post, but I think the restaurant reads these reviews and they should know they make delicious chicken and beef patties.
C'etait vraiment delicieux, merci le fils...
