Quality typical of all you can eat sushi. I've not been in an all-you-can eat sushi shop for quite a while. Sushi mooshi reminded me why I usually avoid all-you-can-eat sushi places.
Sushi is made to order, rather than a buffet style deal. Portion sizes are decent, service is pretty good. Servers did not use the typical trick of o-sorry-I-forgot-about-that-order employed in some all-you-can-eat restaurants in order to avoid giving customers who would only eat the more expensive items on the menu (ie sashimi).
However, the quality of the sushi is average. The seaweed damp, and the rice lacks the firmness and the sweetness indicative of problem with some combination or all of the following: 1. a well rinsed high quality rice, 2. a good mixture of rice vinegar, sugar and salt, 3. mixed too roughly, and 4. not allowed to cool to a proper temperature before using/cooled or left for too long.
The tempura shrimp also lacks a "bounciness" to the meat that indicates a high quality shrimp.
Overall, it's evident that the focus is quantity over quality. I believe for the same price, I could have had something with much higher quality and still sufficiently fulfilling.
However, I cannot fault the restaurant for offering all-you-can-eat and not offer high quality food. The menu is built to a price point. It is definitely up to the customers to decide if they want quantity vs. quality. If it's quantity they want. They can't go wrong with...
Read moreI've eaten in expensive sushi places and in very cheap sushi places and this one is in the middle, at least when it comes to prices. Although, I remember checking it out before and have the impression that it used to be more expensive.
Anyway, ordered thru uber eats and when it arrived, my first impression was how small the hosomakis were. I mean, I know the hosomaki is the smaller roll, but these were half the size of most other places. But it came in 8 pieces instead of 6. So, I guess that makes it ok. And after all, maybe its small but its very good? 4.2 stars out of 5 can't be wrong, right? Wrong! The sushi was bland and tasteless. Then I went for the temaki. One of the most important things on a good temaki is fresh and crunchy nori. Well, the temaki nori was chewey. Finally, the spring rolls. Maybe those will save the whole thing! I went mouth and mind opened for it aaaaand...... Well, it was mediocre. And the sauce tasted like nothing. Interesting that I began watching the new schawerzenegger TV series "fubar" just as the food arrived, and it was the perfect pair: High cost for bland products.
One reviewer here on google maps mentioned "best kept secret in town". Well, maybe it should have been...
Read moreLets start with the good. The staff is kind and the service is good. It's a small place, so that is kind of expected.
The sushi itself is absolutely delicious. I had the chance to discover new flavors that were quite pleasant.
The tempura shrimp were on par with other restaurants and the edamame were cooked to perfection. A simple thing and yet, I've often had mush edamame, so kudos to that.
I was somewhat excited by a couple menu items I'm not use to seeing on all you can eat menus. Wontong soup and peanut dumplings. I will go out of my way to pick some up in Chinatown when I can. Unfortunately, the dumplings in both the soup and the peanut sauce were completely mush and tasteless. I huge disappointment.
A couple other little things that bothered me: There really isn't all that many options. The spicy mayo is 1.50$ each. (serving size of about 3-4 tbsp). That killed me. I also asked for some ginger and never got any.
All in all, it's worth trying. It is a decent all you can eat. However, if you are looking for an all you can eat to really eat your heart out, this may not be your best option.
The best still remains Sushi...
