EDIT - Please note that the Ikon Sushi has reached out to myself a few days after our takeout order. They stressed that they care very much about customer service and thanked me for writing this review as they will source their seafood elsewhere for better quality. I have bumped the review up from 2 stars to 3 stars due to this great customer service. We have resolved the issue and will be trying this place again in the near future.
ORIGINAL REVIEW - Was very excited to try this place out of recommendation from friends and seeing good reviews online. This is not the worst sushi I have had but not the greatest either. Price point is fair for what I thought was going to be higher quality sushi - but was disappointed by a few things.
I got to-go the S5. Supreme Sushi, Sashimi & Roll, D1. NegiToro Ikura Don (with Uni), and D2. Ikura Sake-don (salmon and ikura). The party tray was good and nothing to really complain about for that. However, something went terribly wrong with the Donburis. The rice was good but the Ikura in both the Salmon and Uni Dons were both bitter. What I was really excited for and anticipating was the Uni Don but it was a let down - the uni was BITTER which is a clear indication that the quality is low or that it's not fresh. Fresh uni should be sweet, mild, and creamy in taste. When the Uni and Ikura is 2/3 of the fish in the donburi you can see how that can be an issue. On the website it stated that the Uni was seasonal - I would have rather they told me the uni was not in season or meh quality and I bought something else than eating low-grade uni. The Ikura Sake-don (salmon) was good - just picked out the ikura and went from there.
The staffs were really nice when we went to pick up the food and greeted us nicely. Packaging is very cute and nice. I would like to think that maybe this was just a miss for us since all the other reviews are indicating good quality but not sure what happened with ours. Will not be trying this place again for quite some time as there are other places I have really enjoyed such as Taro's or Chosan Sushi that offers fresh and reliable, good...
Read moreAn incredible new addition to Markham for those that enjoy omakase style sushi for take-out! Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to enjoy their food in the restaurant due to the restrictions so I will be basing off the review on their takeout experience...and long story short, it's incredible.
I've had the following from them: Supreme Sushi set (8 piece option) and their Ikon don.
First off, everyone knows the key ingredient in sushi is the rice, and IKON definitely make sure to cook and season their rice well. Consistent with great texture and sweet vinegary flavour that is not overbearing but allows for the fish and other ingredients to compliment it well.
Their IKON don was a version of Chirashi I've never had before but done so well as they've made sure to cut up the ingredients, and placed in a way to ensure you'll always get a proper bite. For the price, the presentation and ingredients is outstanding and I would recommend this for a filling and fresh lunch option.
Their Supreme sushi set is a great way to be introduced to what IKON is truly capable of. You'll get Nigiri sushi of the classic sorts like salmon, tuna, shrimp, however with the best version of those. You'll also get creative and beautiful pieces love quai egg on flying fish roe sushi, making for an elegant presentation but the flavours stand out the most with the 2 complementing each other. They don't just out things together cuz it's cool and it's buzz word type ingredients. When they do, it works out, it makes sense and it's delicious.
On top of all that...they wrap everything in fabric making for a wonderful presentation and as if you've just been given a gift. Very traditional to japense bento boxes and gifts given during visits. A wonderful and feel-good touch that makes them stand out amongst the rest ...even though they have no problem doing that with the quality of their dish. They just do everything at the highest level.
Check this place out y'all. You won't regret...
Read moreLove getting my sushi fix at iKon Markham. I much prefer quality sushi& their ingredients instead of rolls just packed full of too much rice. The presentation is beautiful if we want something fancy to enjoy ourselves or to bring over to share with others. It is an impression that I got from the very first time I ordered and even now, their standards have not changed.
I enjoy ordering black dragon rolls (big pieces and packed full of fresh ingredients without overrolling with too much rice). The unique special roll that I love to get is also their spikon roll. It's an interesting twist to the classic spider roll. If you love salted egg, this is topped with it to give it that extra umami. We've also ordered their chirashi don a few times. Not only is it super colorful and pretty, but it tastes really fresh (despite the ingredients chopped up into such tiny pieces). Each spoonful of rice with a blend of sashimi is really enjoyable. Recently we also ordered the bc uni (tray of 10 slots)... Omg this was sooooo fresh and so good. Each slot had about 2 to 3 pieces so you can imagine a tray with 10slots between 2 people was so insane and we savoured every bite. I've also ordered their sake and yuzu sake. It pairs nicely with our sushi order. These are not available or readily found at the lcbo. The yuzu one was super flavorful 👌
Their service is excellent. Always have my order ready at the pick up time that I prefer. I usually call ahead for a large order and request to pick up a few hours later and it's always ready. The staff was really kind to always offer to help carry my huge haul to my car. I always ask for more ginger and they are always generous with their servings for me.
This is my go-to sushi spot in Markham. Wish they opened more days because they random sushi craving kicks in mid week...
