No time to read: Good food, but service is average to bad, with waiters and the manager or owner being extremely unpleasant and dishonest. Long review: I have been going to Kam Shing for a long time now, including the one on Plamondon, which is better.
If you are eating in, the portions are large and the food is tasty, for relatively low prices. I wonder how they manage that, with what seems like at least a hundred choices on the menu.
I would have recommended the shrimp wonton soup, the general tao chicken, the sesame beef and the ginger beef stew, but really everything I have tried on the menu tastes good.
As far as service goes, that's a different story. Waiters, without being openly rude, seem like they are extremely bored, and appear like they have been working there for ever.
**One lunch experience with my mother there, the man that looked like the manager or the owner got very annoyed at us and said something out loud that I can only assume was an insult, as we were leaving. I turned around and he was staring angrily at me. I confronted him and manged to understand from his angry gibberish that he was unhappy about us leaving a 2$ CAD tip on a 43 CAD bill. We left a 50 CAD bill, and I can only assume that the waiter swapped it for 2 20's and a 5.
I tried ordering to go, since I did not want to deal with the staff, but the waiter gave me a higher price than the person I spoke to on the pone to order by 2-3 CAD. Additionally, the portion was very small, roughly a third of your standard delivery cardboard box.
I would have rated this place 0 or 1 stars if not for the all the good times I enjoyed eating there in the past.
If you are going I strongly advise asking to pay by card, or at least at the counter, or write your tip on the bill, so that the waiters can't try...
Read moreNot good. We went as a group and we have done the tour of asian restaurants in Montreal. We have seen the difference between good asian cuisine and bad asian cuisine on the island.
The restaurant itself is not the cleanest. 1) the cutlery is a bit old and dirty looking, 2) Outdated looking inside. The only good thing was the spring rolls and the won ton soup. The staff were nice to us.
However, the bad stuff were more than the good: Firstly, the general tao chicken was too big. It was like eating fried chicken instead of general tao chicken pieces. It's the first time i ate that big pieces of chicken in an asian restaurant. Secondly the sauce missed the spot, wasn't sweet enough and savory enough (usually should give off a good umami/msg taste with general tao chicken). Secondly, the rice was burnt and even though tasted ok was too overpowering to ignore. Thirdly, the noodles were soggy, not crunchy enough and seemed rushed. Lastly, the soup with the bokchoy and pork was undercooked. If i can say why it's bad in one sentence it's the fact it lacks flavour and pzaz that you get at good asian restaurants that put time in their food.
We were all disappointed and felt cheated out of our money we spent and our night was ruined. Mind you this could be because of the time and day we were there but that shouldn't be the case. A good restaurant will be a good restaurant always. And i've been here 3 times and every-time i feel the same about the food here, it's...
Read moreOn the 27 of August, my mother and I when to this restaurant and we're verbally assaulted and felt in danger.
We are touring and have very limited budget to eat outside, we didn't know that we MUST give tips every time that we eat outside.
When I didn't include the tip after eating there, the waiter asked me if I wanted to pay it in cash or card, I just asked "the tip is voluntary, isn't it?" Then he overreacted and started shouting at us in front of other customers and staff. We just got up and started walking to the door and I said "thank you" to the other waiter. Suddenly, the same man start shouting at us "if you don't pay the service, you don't come back, bye bye..."
Of course, I reached to it as he was disrespectful with my mother and I, my mother doesn't know how to speak English or French. Therefore, I just replied "next time I'll give you double tip", "the service was great", "I'll see you next time".
Suddenly, he came behind us and we thought that he was gonna hit us, he didn't stop shouting saying "push the door and get out, don't come back". He kept doing it even when we were on the street with plenty people around and I just kept saying the same as him "bye, bye".
I'm so surprised how rude this guy was with us, tourist and not aware all the time about this voluntarily obligation regarding the service, many of us are not used to...
