La Piccola is a gem hidden away in the North of Montreal. It's the kind of well developed and popular establishment you expect of a downtown eatery, tucked away where only the locals can find it.
Food: A fusion of Italian and French, the menu at La Piccola offers classic options like pizza, veal marsala, and chicken cordon bleu. Personally I think it's a waste to go to a nice restaurant such as this only to then order a pizza, but the pizzas are quite good and will satisfy a picky eater or your children. The main plates are very well prepared and presented. I often say you can judge the quality of the food you are about to get by the quality of the bread that is served beforehand. La Piccola more than passes this test with a delicious French inspired white bread served with butter. My favorite dish here is the veal marsala, it might be the best available on the island. The reason this establishment gets 4 stars from me is that the desserts don't live up to the quality of the main dishes. They are acceptable; but after such an amazing meal it's disappointing to get an average dessert dish. 4/5 stars for food.
Atmosphere: The interior here is a bit dark/gloomy for my tastes, but very few people come here to eat inside. What makes La Piccola magical are the two terraces where you can eat outdoors in a cozy and comfortably lit exterior. 4/5 stars for atmosphere due to the interior.
Pricing: This restaurant offers high tier meals at mid tier pricing, and that's a win. Nearly every main dish is exactly $22. 5/5 stars for pricing.
Other details: this is a byow establishment so hit the dep beforehand for your favorite wine and bring it...
Read moreThink twice before going to this restaurant. We went to this restaurant for my husband's birthday last night and I regret that I ever made the reservation. The only big advantage of this restaurant is that you can bring your own wine....which you will need to deal with the circus. The restaurant is poorly managed- service was virtually non-existent after taking the order and delivering the appetizer and drinks. Then the big wait. After waiting an hour for our pizza, we finally had to go find the waitress to ask her what was going on. She said there was 'a problem in the kitchen'. Okay, so why not just tell us rather than let us sit there and wait? The pizza finally did arrive after 1 hour 15 minutes. Then came the issue of getting a to go box from the staff. They seemed totally confused about a request for an empty pizza box--as if they had never ever had such a request- even though I could see empty pizza boxes stacked in the kitchen. The restaurant did comp the appetizer, but at that point, we didn't care anymore. We just wanted to pay the bill and get out of the restaurant as quickly as possible. It was a ruined evening and we certainly won't be back. We could have had better service at...
Read more1 - Pizza is not pizza. It's ready-made pita with what you ask additionally for on top. When stuff is added on TOP of the cheese, then you know it's ready-made with additions. Ate half, brought the other half home and my 19 year-old said PITA crust. 2 - Ordered Italian salad as an entrée. Requested Parmesan cheese as did my friends. Server brought slivered parmesan and also grated. Never bothered mentioning that the slivered was $3 extra. Only the grated is free. 3 - We are 4 at the table. Brings bread for 3....really? Basic math... Overall, not what it used to be. My friends came from Repentigny, St-Leonard and Laval because I live a few blocks away and loved it the last few times we were there but definitely NOT Italian. Ready-made quick, pay-up and go! Unfortunately, we will be looking for a new BYOW place...
