Absolutely loved my meal. Every dish was perfectly prepared. Service was not only prompt but genuinely friendly and efficient. When seated at first I was their only in house patron, ahead of the dinner rush on the Friday evening before Christmas on Monday. A constant string of take-out/delivery orders soon informed me of the popularity of Makira Sushi. Staff were busy despite the dining room vacancies. Takoyaki is exceptional! Unagi sushi was exactly what I'd hoped it to be. Refreshing fresh avocado and shrimp in the pink tiger roll satiated deeply. Great crunch too. The salmon sashimi...I've had better, but only ever once. On a rather expensive evening out with a foodie friend in Toronto where the saki tab ran well into the sublime very quickly. The sashimi at that Izakaya was exquisite and has been my benchmark ever since. Blew my entertainment budget for a month in one evening (and then some let's be honest that was a total splurge evening). Makira could easily be a benchmark food experience and without blowing up the budget, or the saki hangover. 😆 The atmosphere is so Canadian it made me smile at first impression. It could easily be a great burger joint I walked into with but a few decor alterations. Don't judge anyone or anything by first impressions and you might find yourself pleasantly surprised. By the time I left the house was filling up rapidly with couples on date nights. It's a comfortable establishment which is great because I was definately not dressed to impress on my way home from shopping in grubby week clothes. 🫣 Try the tea. Had mine with lemon and ginger I plucked from the garnish of my serving plates. Really soothed my sinus cold sore throat and my pallett both. Everything I was served was excellent. This is not an Izakaya in Toronto and I can't yet compared with a genuine Japanese in country food experience, but the food could easily transport you outside of London and the winter equinox chill. Had me closing my eyes and savoring the textures, flavors and what little I could smell with this silly head cold. Throughout my meal experience I found myself grinning and pausing. Enjoying the mouth feel or freshness, quality ingredients and the expertise and care with which it has been prepared. Several Japanese friends have informed me that the food scene available in Toronto easily rivals that of Osaka or Tokyo. So the bar was set high, I used to live there. I'll have to find out for myself one day just how Canada measures up on the global Sushi scale by visiting mecca. Until then Makira is only a hundred kilometers away from home and will be a meal destination for me from now on. Worth the drive IMO. And yeah I didn't a bit more than my usual dinner out budget by ordering a la cart instead of the Bento or a noodle dish. But I was craving some of my favorites and was certainly not disappointed with my first visit here. Thank you to everyone at Makira Sushi. I...

Places like Makira shine brightly among the scores of dreadful places to eat in London that may attract you with central locations, flashy branding or maybe a cheap pun in the name. Not gonna lie, it's a little out of the way - but it's worth the trip. Makira is not just going through the motions, they are truly dedicated to consistency, quality and taste. They take great care in preparing their food and it shows.

-The Sushi is well-portioned, carefully put together and arranged with a fresh taste. Their Inari Nigiri is the best in city. Slightly sweet and spongy as they should be. -The Tempura, whether seafood or veg is light and crispy without the heavy, oily feel you often get from other places - the shrimp are well-cleaned and the veggies are skilfully cut to please the eye. -The Spring Rolls and compact but crispy and nicely flavored. -The Gyoza are nicely fried and seasoned, again without being oily or soggy. -The Miso Soup is lightly salted with a nice, subtle miso flavor and makes an excellent appetizer. -The Chicken Teriyaki Donburi is made with juicy thigh meat, a light batter and a very fragrant sauce with a subtle five-spice flavor served on steamed rice (which is btw, also well-executed).

Get their Bento Box for a 'Buffet-for-One' that puts any All-You-Can-Eat joint around...

Guys-I don’t know where the 4.9 star rating comes from. If I could give negative stars I would. The sushi was hands down the worst sushi I have ever had in my life! Grocery store sushi is a million times better. The rolls we purchased ALL had the same canned crab/mayo filling (tasted like a crab salad sandwich). Every single one was the same filling. The presentation was sloppy and every sushi piece was cut sloppily and too large to fit in your mouth and extra chewy. Absolutely revolting. The sticky rice was so sticky that it was like a paste. The soy sauce comes in cheap packets and tasted like salty gasoline. Is this the standard for London? I just moved to the area and I’ve eaten a lot of sushi in my life but nothing like this. This was as if my children wanted to take a stab at trying sushi and this was the result. I’m just so upset because I feel like if you’re going to spend $100 on sushi for 2 people, you can’t get this monstrosity. For everyone that left a 5 star review, was this fake? Did someone coerce you into lying and posting a review that would purposely lead the masses astray. If I hadn’t had great sushi in my past, I would stop eating sushi immediately for the rest of my life. That’s how bad this...

Continuing my sushi journey, I went all the way out to Lambeth. The spot is named Makira Sushi. As I walked in the door, I was taken aback by a marvelous aroma. Another neat feature of Makira are their black screens that divide the room. This gives privacy. I started my meal with two sets of special rolls: Crazy Cali and Joe’s. The Crazy Calis were deep-fried California rolls with cream cheese, spicy mayo, and unagi sauce. Joe’s sushi rolls had avocado and salmon in the center, but an extra avocado layer wrapped around the rice. Round two consisted of Red Dragon. These were torched dynamite rolls that came with salmon, spicy mayo, and hot sauce. My server was great. She was extra sweet and brought a smile to my face. Makira Sushi serves conventional sushi but also original special rolls, which are only found here. Some examples are Joe’s, Crazy Cali, Crazy Veggie, Pink Tiger, Green Mountain, and Wharncliffe. Makira suits sushi fanatics and especially sushi lovers looking for something different.

Massive rolls, personally too much crab meat. However, a great price for the amount of food. Can't wait to go back and try more! Photos are their dynamite specialty rolls (green, red and back Dragon) The atmosphere isn't a place I would want to dine in, the smell of Subway next door was turn-off. Very little seating. This time of the year it was very cold inside. I'm glad take out is an option. However, the online menu wasn't updated on prices so when we went it was more expensive.

Got this through skipthedishes and loved it! It was delicious and very fresh. The batter for the tempura and fish was crispy and light. Given everything going on right now, we didn't want to risk eating raw fish, but cannot wait to try. The portions were very generous and the price was fair. The only criticism I have is that they forgot to pack my soy sauce and if I could make a suggestion it would be that they need to provide more tartar sauce. Definitely will try again!
