I do not like this restaurant at all. Have been a couple times, and don't plan to return.
A couple positives: it's a good size, so there's always a table available prices are pretty low for the breakfasts, at least pretty middle-range food... Not fantastic, but still edible the farmer's sausage is big and usually cooked well
Peterborough has so many fantastic breakfast places that this one couldn't even compare if it tried. That being said, the lunch/dinner options aren't any better than the breakfast ones.
Portions are so inconsistent - my Reuben was smaller than my hand; my son's kids meal cheeseburger was bigger!
It's also pretty grimy in the restaurant area and the bathrooms are never clean either. There's a sliding door into the kitchen, and it always looks like it could use a good thorough cleaning (the kitchen). In addition to that, there are always stacks of papers and book keeping on tables, on top of the fridges, at the front counter, in the window sills - it's very odd.
The server we have had every time we've been there always makes some kind of mistake (putting ice in water that you asked for without; putting sausage on a Benny that you asked for extra sauce on; etc) or doesn't bother to refill coffee (in an empty restaurant) until you ask, or other seemingly small things that once they build up, amount to an unpleasant experience.
The owner/chef is also not very welcoming, and edges on being rude. He once told us to put our infant car seat on the take because "it is safer" than on the floor, and when we said we planned to put him in the high chair, he rolled his eyes at us and said "whatever" and then slammed the kitchen door.
Speaking of the high chair, it neither has a table attached, nor does it fit flush with the tables, so if you have a small child, own to bring your own booster seat, or feel frustrated by the high chair situation.
The decor is also dusty, old, and outdated. I'm not sure why people come here unless it has something to do with the price. 🤷
Wouldn't recommend. Try Copper Spoons or Two Dishes Cookshop, or Monaghan Cafe, or basically any of the other...
Read moreAs another reviewer has recently said: I was very disappointed while visiting on my way home from a camping trip. When I see a restaurant that's rated above 3 stars I would hope it would be clean. The walls and floors needed attention in the dining area. Our waitress was OK at best. She brought us drinks and menus and took our orders within reasonable time. Once our meals came, we never saw her again. In the meanwhile, another customer identified a stove fire in the kitchen while the chef was out of kitchen. When it came time to settle up, we walked up to pay, and the chef, and I'm assuming the owner, began to criticize how I had asked my waitress to add mushrooms to my omlette. The waitress said they could be added without concern. My purpose was to substitute mushrooms for the onions in the omlette because I have an onion sensitivity. He said he premixes things and complained about extra sauteing. He went on to suggest that I not ask for anything like that in the future because when it's busy in the restaurant he can't. For reference; there was about 4 tables of 2-6 people in the restaurant capable of seating likely 40-60 people. I couldn't understand what his purpose in being angry with me was. I wasn't sure whether he wanted sympathy or my apologies for asking if I could have mushrooms in my omlette when I ordered. He suggested to come back soon when we left. I'll tell you what, neither of us will return to Square Plates in...

In particular I want to tell you about the Reuben. I love any sliced meat sandwich be it a Philly Cheese-steak, a roast beef, and of course the Reuben. I came in at about 10:30 on a Friday and surprised the owner by asking for a sandwich over the regular breakfast. What I got was the best Reuben I have ever had. It wasn't fancy, just the regular sliced meet, dijon, cheese and the sauerkraut on rye. For me what made it special was the sauerkraut. I find usually it sticks out and doesn't fit with the rest of the flavors, but in this sandwich it blended perfectly adding the exact right amount of acidity to even out the cheese without pooping out.
Great sandwich great restaurant, for anyone in Peterborough or traveling though I would recommend...
