We were in this pub a lot pre-pandemic and had birthday dinner takeout during - it was great! Today we decided to order things we didn't try before - mug of unpeeled prawns for 15$ (kind what you get from Costco frozen isle) and was served with what appeared to be chunky salsa not vodka cocktail sauce . Yam fries portion for $9.50 had ... 15 fries - that's $0.63 per fry. When we expressed our surprise to the server, she explained that it's the smallest item on the menu (eg. it wasn't a mistake).
Service was lovely, btw! Server apologized for portion being too small and brought another one on the house. Sweet gesture, but the next order of fries was as salty as my father in law, when we didn't invite him to the wedding! I am salt fiend, full sodium soy sauce is my jam, but I could have 1 fry only, before putting it aside. Another person in our party tried it and gagged.
We also got Shepperd's pie, which came in a tiny bowl with a giant portion of fries and mushy peas. The pie itself tasted like ground beef mixed with chunky mashed potatoes and baked. A bit of seasoning on top did little to save it. Peas tasted like peas - bland and tasteless.
We had Stuffed Yorkies that we had there before and liked them a lot, but it tasted like the cook just lost his dog or got into a bad divorce or something - mashed potatoes were chunky and gelatinous (they're called "rustic", which is fine if they have some seasoning to them, but it looked like someone started mashing them and gave up on the entire thing half way through). Meat was something in between Safeway thick slice deli and grease soaked fat. Our party member couldn't eat it and we packed it up. I unfortunately only took a picture after, so it looks like ..... I will let your imagination finish that sentence.
I don't know what happened during pandemic - change of staff or recipes, but after paying $90+ for indigestion and disappointment we will...
Read moreWent November 23 - Had a late dinner with my daughter, who is under 19. Not sure if kids were allowed, but after calling, they confirmed that it was OK. When we arrived, there was another party with children.
When you walk in, looks like there is a pub side and a dining room side. For the dining room, you just sit your self down and a server will come to you. Wasn't quite sure and when I motioned to a server that I can sit down anywhere, she looked at me weird. I guess everyone reads the signs and follows.
Anyways, sat in the corner facing the dart section. Server was pleasant and asked if we wanted drinks. Initially asked what dark beers they have and the answer was what I think was a local ale. I think had to ask do you have a stout, and then was offered a Guiness, which I said yes. Maybe its me, but would you not just tell me all your dark beers?
For dinner i ordered the stuffed Yorkie and my daughter had the ahi tuna poke bowl. I thought the stuffed Yorkie was good. It comes with a fair bit of mash potatoes for filler and a combo of sauteed and crispy onions. A little salty at times, but overall, very tasty. The beef is thinly sliced. Not as tender as could be, but still enjoyed it.
My daughter enjoyed her poke though she could have done without the mango. I thought the tuna was good. Seemed fresh, especially for a late dinner.
For dessert, we shared the sticky toffee pudding. Could use a little more toffee, but overall had a nice sweetness and went well with the ice cream. The dessert is also servied with whip cream, which my daughter agreed that it could have left out.
Overall, thought it was nice place and would definitely...
Read moreRight on No. 2 and Steveston Highway lays an awesome looking pub called OâHares. Menu isnât too overwhelming with choices which is good to see. Prices are a bit on the heavier side. Tonight I decided to order the dry ribs, chicken strips and fries and an OâHare burger (bacon, cheese, mushroom).
Called in for a take out tonight as the girlfriend and I wanted to start watching holiday movies. As I arrived, their lot was nearly full and the restaurant was definitely at capacity. Waited a while at the door but I totally understand as there were just 2 staff members on at the time. When the food came, I was very excited to try! As I arrived home and opened up our food, we discovered that they got my girlfriendâs burger wrong and when I phoned to explain what happened, staff there were very apologetic and wanted to make it right. They quickly fired another burger on the grill as I was on the phone and made sure the same mistake wouldnât happen again.
When I went back to pick up the burger, again the FOH staff were extremely apologetic and mentioned they appreciated our business. Itâs honestly rare to find a place right now whoâs willing to make their customers happy by remaking their order.
The fingers and fries were very good, had a lot of meat on them and a good amount of fries. The burger looked mouthwatering and my girlfriend gave 2 thumbs up. The dry ribs were a bit bland, and came with a side of soy sauce which is a weird compliment to something thatâs supposed to already be salty.
Overall, I will give OâHares another try and maybe even dine...
