Read moreA huge thank you to the associate that helped me make the switch to 'La Sera,' a darker roast, today at 416.
I had been drinking Balzac's 'Espresso' blend (as a coffee) and 'Dark Affair' as well as Planet Bean's 'Freedom Fighter' - all better as smooth and flavourful dark roasts than Starbucks' burnt blends.
After having inconsistencies with Balzac's espresso blend (around the time their prices increased) - and an absolutely disappointing in-store experience - I knew I had to switch coffees, but it can be a pretty big investment for continuous disappointment.
I was super upset as I explained to the 416 associate what I desired in my coffee beans/flavours/etc, having just been dismissed by the coffee shop a few doors over. The associate immediately understood what I was looking for - was clearly educated in coffee - did not blame ME for my having a bad experience with the previous roasts I was using (Balzacs) - and she made a great recommendation, which I'm currently enjoying.
Even before I brewed the cup of 'La Sera', after I ground the beans, I could smell the sweetness the associate had accurately described to me. My first cup is fantastic, with cream. Ground at the same setting and weight I usually brew for measured comparison. It definitely contains the boldness that's lacking in "Million Dollar" and "College Street" which didn't appeal to me (although very very smooth and enjoyable nonetheless).
I look forward to trying another cup tomorrow morning with a fresher palate :)
Also: the bag size makes WAY more sense! Nice to have a bag that doesn't break the bank and lasts more than seven cups!
Support 416 if you desire an experience with trained and educated staff that care when you have a problem they can help with. They clearly understand coffee and coffee drinkers.
TLDR: "La Sera" makes an amazing dark roast filtered coffee. 416 has staff that are kind and educated and rep...
Read moreEvery local coffee lover needs to check this place out! The store front is small and minimalist where the focus is on creating high quality, hand crafted espresso drinks. The single origin beans are roasted multiple times a week and sold fresh. Price is great compared to other single origin freshly roasted beans.
The staff are incredible - very knowledgeable and friendly. The drinks are amazing. I've tried the flat white, iced coaco (an iced latte with rich chocolate compote made in house), and a pour over. All were expertly made and so delicious. We also really appreciated that they were dog friendly!
This is a game changing addition to the St. Catharines coffee scene. They are bringing the quality and feel of a big city coffee shop...
