Food and service were both great 🙋🏻♀️ It felt very welcoming and warm. We hadn't had western African food before and the owner lady was very helpful to explain each dishes for us. We ended up ordering #1,#2, and#3 popular dishes.
Egusi with Pounded Yam was great. There were definitely some spices, but not spicy. Me and my boyfriend somehow thought we tasted tofu in the complex grainy sauce. But the owner explained there is no tofu and it was pumpkin seeds based soup(sauce). Pounded Yam was fun! It was soft like soft gnocchi and tasted a lot sweeter and flavorful. In between fingers, it felt like clay and easy to handle to dip in egusi.
Catfish Pepper Soup was full of surprises. There was definitely good kick of the spices and peppers, and it was just right amount. The spiciness doesn't stay in the mouth and I was ready to go for another sip 5secs after a sip. The catfish itself was very tender and it fell apart as we touched the meat with tip of a spoon. It was a very hearty warming soup. I can totally understand why they say it cures cold. Loved it.
Jellof Rice with plantain was the most familiar taste. I felt it was somewhat similar to jambalaya, but a lot more dense and there was no vegetables or meat cooked with the rice. The plantain was cooked to perfection and seasoned just right!
The only negative thing I kind of want to mention is that different websites show a bit different menus for this restaurant from one another. For example, we didn't have an option to get the egusi with meat in the dine in menu while some online menu say it is an option. And prices were a bit different, too.
Yet, our overall experience was excellent at...
Read moreI have been an advocate for this place long as I can remember. No matter what anyone said I also drove traffic there. But on Saturday April 27, 2023 I had one of the worse experiences. I ordered the egusi with all the meats only to have the biggest chunks of one of the nastiest meats with no chicken in site, one small piece of beef. Whichever chef made the food that day, especially the egusi please please don’t put whatever organ you put in there. I don’t mind heart, liver or kidney but this type of was horrifying. I kid you not I feel that it was a pig organ not even beef. I don’t mind paying even $40 for a dish but the quality is more important to me. I also ordered the pepper soup and the amount was too little for $20 and very grainy. I hope someone takes this seriously because I would hate to have my people who visit Vancouver to elsewhere and your rating decrease from more people due to the...
Read moreWe've been eating at Alebi ever since we moved to Surrey and it's fantastic. My partner is Nigerian and I am Canadian and I've always loved good, authentic Nigerian food since she introduced it to me. After moving from Toronto, it was harder to find Nigerian food but we stumbled across Alebi and instantly were hooked.
Today I had Jollof rice and Chicken, with plantain, yam fries and fried gizzard. It was outstanding! My partner had okra and pounded yam and loved it as well! Whether you are Nigerian and looking for a taste of home, or from any other culture but want to try something new that you won't regret, Alebi is the way to go!
Thanks to Alebi and everyone who works there. You're always so helpful and polite, the food and...
