I’m a black women.
A few weeks ago, I wanted to treat myself and placed an order online at a Japanese restaurant near my place (Aji Sai) and went to pick it up at the time indicated on my confirmation email.
When I arrived at the restaurant, there were 2 bags ready for pickup. I explained to a server that I have ordered online for pick up and gave my name. The server told me to show my confirmation email, which I did, and for some reason he was not able to find my name on the email (which was the first line of the email). Instead of asking me my phone number or try to look for another way to find my order, he asked me if I ordered at the right restaurant and the guy preparing the sushis said something to the server in their language in a mocking tone while looking at me and then asked me if I was looking for the African restaurant located next door. At that point, I felt kind of frustrated because I gave my name, show the confirmation email and instead of trying to help me, I was treated like I was stupid. It was humiliating. I know it can be a misunderstanding, but why asking me if I was looking for the African restaurant next door?
Then, another waitress came and asked for my name and gave my order right away (as stated earlier, there were only 2 bags).
I don’t think it is normal to be treated this way, especially in the service industry. Is it that weird to order Japanese food as a black person? Is it ok to assume I was looking for African food even if I show proof that I was at the correct place? Casual racism is a real thing and it is really...
Read morePutting pickled ginger in sushi roll is lazy. It's a condiment, like wasabi, and you don't put it in the centre of sushi (I hope).I understand the budget is tight w the inflation, but please come up with something better that makes customer feel worthy paying for.
I ordered Sushi Tray F ($46.95) and Spring rolls ($6.49, Free w order over $30) for delivery. Overall, im happy with the meal, except the 12 pcs of ginger rolls. It's a lack of creativity, if not underestimating your customer. I've been to this restaurant since it's opened, think it was more thoughtful then, with the owner himself in the sushi bar.
Rice was cooked properly (it's important to me it's not pasty), and seasoning was great.
Ubereats: so I took the free spring roll which was great, but the tip was calculated for the % of sushi + springroll+ tax. Then springroll was deducted in the end. Small thing, but a freebie should not be in the calculation. I heard this is the same for other restaurants "deals", tax and tip are calculated for the pre-discount price (unless the customer is not mindful to calculate manually). I felt...
Read moreAji Sai is one of our favourite restaurants in Toronto. My family and I have visited this restaurant for several years. Now with the change in operating its in house service we like to support Aji Sai regularly, and order food to our home to keep this fine restaurant alive. Aji Sai is consistent and has a wonderful menu full of many choices to satisfy your palette. Dinners, Bento boxes and Sushi platters are fresh, creative and beautifully displayed. The staff are very accommodating to any of your needs and will change orders to your liking. We also love their homemade miso dressing which they will sell to customers if you ask for it. I highly recommend this restaurant and I hope if you do order from Aji Sai you will definitely go back for more dishes. On a personal note, I wish Aji Sai many more prosperous years ahead and will continue to support their efforts in serving the public with delicious food and excellent...
