I wanted to try something new and I noticed this highly rated Filipino food takeout/restaurant not far from my neighbourhood. It's a cozy spot with a few low benches and tables for eating in. There are photos of all the menu items on the front of the counter and walls, giving the Tagalog and English names of each dish. The person behind the counter was very pleasant and helpful. The price was good. I tried the beef pares silog and the sweet pork silog with rice (which comes with two eggs on top and small side of something similar to coldslaw with a vinegar taste) both dishes were tasty. The beef was delicious. The eggs and rice were good, they have that slightly more authentic flavour than plain eggs and rice youd make yourself (maybe its fish oil?). I want to go back and try new dishes! There was a short line on a weekday evening. The wait is 10 minutes or so for the food. I'll be honest, I've been dating a Filipina for about 8 months and I had never had Filipino food before meeting her. Nothing about it appeals to me - I don't eat pork, I can't stand fat/gristle, I'm not really too into rice or rice noodles...so the prognosis wasn't good. I've been to Max's and found it extremely disappointing and overpriced. All that to say, my hopes weren't too high leading into lunch today. To my surprise, it was good! Absolutely fantastic experience! Visited with my family and couldn’t have been happier. The beef tapa with homemade gravy sauce paired with java rice was an absolute delight—a perfect blend of flavors that left us craving for more.
