As a long-time customer of Federick's, I'm really disappointed to share my recent dining experience. It was nothing like the quality and service I've enjoyed for the past 20 years.
Starting with the food, my family and I ordered four dishes, but they all lacked flavour.
The chili squid, which we specifically asked for with extra garlic, arrived without any garlic at all and tasted bland. Plus, the batter was falling off the squid pieces.
The chili chicken lacked the authentic flavours we usually get at Federick's. There also wasn't enough gravy, and the containers were only half-filled, leaving us with a tiny portion.
Chicken pakoras were okay. Noodles were oily and had little meat.
The rice portions were noticeably smaller than before.
All four dishes were shoved into a single plastic bag. We got only one red and green chili sauce for the whole order and just one lemon wedge. When we asked for extra lemon wedges, we were told there would be an additional charge. After spending over $60, you'd think a couple of extra wedges wouldn't be a big deal.
When we placed the order and asked for the chili chicken to be extra spicy, the server who is at least 40 years old, replied in a fake, babyish voice that they'd provide extra chili sauce on the side, which is definitely not the same thing. However, it was just chili in vinegar and didn't actually make the dish any spicier.
I understand that many restaurants are facing high operational costs, but cutting back on basic ingredients, flavours, and overall quality is unacceptable. Because of this disappointing experience, we'll be trying the Markham location, hoping to find the Federick's we know and love. Unfortunately, the current state of this Scarborough location is a...
Read moreI have been going to the Scarborough location for close to 10 years. However, recently, its been a let down. Last night we went, walked through the door, said hi to the short lady(the one that's been there for years) no response, she continued walking to the back. We then sat down, the waiter brought water, and the menu. We waited for almost 30 minutes to order. Mind you, the restaurant was not busy (took me by surprise, cause usually its super busy). There were only 2/3 tables and those people had already been eating. The waiter was just pacing back and forth in the back, swishing around something in his mouth. Everyone was just at the back. Then he walked to the front, I am guessing to look outside and then noticed us waiting. Came and asked "what do you want to order?" I said pardon me ? We been waiting here forever. Anyhow gave my order. We ordered chicken fried rice and manchurian beef. The other waiter with longish hair brought our food. (He has a tendency to slam plates down on the table when serving) let me tell you, the quality of the food has declined so much. No seasonings, the manchurian beef tasted a hint of beef and no salt. The rice was like eating boiled rice with raw green peas and green onions. The restaurant was dirty, food under the table, the condiments on the table were half empty and dirty. Its like nobody cares anymore, their take out wasn't as busy either. I am starting to think that the people is gradually staying away from the place...and so will I. Do better Fredericks (Scarborough location) I will make the drive to the markham location- they are doing a better job...
Read moreI recently visited Frederick's Hakka in Scarborough, a place I’ve ordered from multiple times before. One thing I appreciate about this restaurant is the consistent quality of their food. Every dish I've tried has been delicious and flavourful, making it a go-to spot for Hakka cuisine.
However, during my latest visit, I noticed that prices have gone up. While this is understandable given the current economic climate, it's still worth mentioning for those who are budget-conscious.
The service was adequate but had some notable shortcomings. The young man serving us was not very attentive, missing basic details like refilling our water glasses, pretty basic. Additionally, we had to wait longer than expected for the bill to arrive, which dampened the overall dining experience.
The most disappointing part of the meal, however, was finding a long strand of hair in my food. This was extremely off-putting, especially since none of the staff wore hair nets. I considered calling the manager but realized that this lapse in hygiene is a larger issue if proper precautions like hair nets aren't being used. Mistakes happen, but this is simply unacceptable and not what customers are paying for. I've never interpreted "The Taste of India" to mean tasting the kitchen staff's hair
Overall, while the food remains tasty, the service and hygiene standards at Frederick's Hakka need significant improvement. I hope they address these issues soon, as they can overshadow the otherwise enjoyable aspects of...
