Review for Gourmet Malaysia Restaurant (5 Stars)
My family and I have been loyal customers of Gourmet Malaysia for years, ever since their humble beginnings in the food court! We're so glad they now have their own spacious restaurant at this location, and crucially, they've maintained their excellent and consistent quality.
What keeps us coming back is the fantastic diversity of authentic Southeast Asian flavours. They truly excel with their Malaysian and Indonesian dishes, offering a wonderful mix you won't easily find elsewhere. They also skillfully blend Southern Chinese wok skills with South Asian influences in their stir-fries, creating unique and delicious options. The menu has something for everyone, and the quality across the board is consistently very good.
On our visits (including today!), we always order a wide variety. Some standout specialties include: Their unique Fried Hainanese Chicken Rice (a must-try!). Small Stingray (Ikan Bakar/Devil Fish) – a real treat and quite rare to find on menus here. Delicious stir-fries. Authentic Malaysian and Indonesian desserts. Excellent Indian offerings like flaky Roti (flatbread) and flavourful curries.
We inevitably leave completely stuffed and thoroughly satisfied every single time!
The restaurant itself is large, comfortable, and well-laid out. It's surprisingly spacious! It's always bustling with a diverse crowd – Chinese, Indian, Malaysian patrons – which speaks volumes about its authenticity and broad appeal. The space is perfect for larger groups or even parties. Near the cashier, they also sell some fun Southeast Asian snacks, which is a nice touch.
A big hit, especially with kids, are the robot servers! They add a fun, modern element to the dining experience.
Service is friendly, and the staff are proficient in Cantonese, English, and Mandarin, making communication easy.
Parking & Location: The location at Sheppard and Brimley is very convenient. Parking depends on the time: it can get busy during peak lunch/dinner hours (especially with the nearby supermarket and mall traffic), but if you come a bit later (around 8-9 PM), finding a spot is usually easy.
Overall: Gourmet Malaysia is a highly recommended, authentic, and satisfying restaurant. They've perfected the art of offering a huge variety of delicious Southeast Asian cuisine in a comfortable setting with consistent quality. We've never been disappointed and will definitely keep coming back for...
Read moreIf you are craving for Malaysian, Indonesian or Thai food and can’t find a good halal spot, this is hands down the place to be. We went there first time and thoroughly enjoyed the food there. Being our first time, all the dishes that were ordered were based on their recommendation. We were 6 people in total and here’s what we had ordered:
Starters
Chicken and Beef Satay: they are two separate dish and each order comes with 6 skewers (12 in total). The satay on its own is very succulent and what elevates them to 100 is the sweet peanut sauce that comes with it.
Main dish
Singaporean Laksa: it’s a soupy noodle dish with a yellow coconut broth. The dish comes with assortments of toppings, which include chicken, small bites of fish cakes and a bunch of other seafood. The coconut flavour topped with the chicken and seafood makes this a 10/10 dish. This is the highlight dish of this restaurant and rightly so. If you’re unsure what to order and can only afford to order one dish, this is the one.
Sambal Shrimp: this shrimp dish is layered to the brim with Sambal. For those who don’t know, Sambal is a native spice/sauce in Indonesia and it’s used in many of the foods there. This is a spicy, shrimp based sauce and has a distinct shrimp-y flavour to it. Might not be for everyone but we loved it. Give this a try and you will love ot too
Opor Ayam (also known as the Green Chicken Curry): This green chicken curry is topped with bell pepper and onion and even though it says green, it’s not too spicy but it does have the chilli flavour to it (most likely due to the green bell pepper). Pair it up with coconut rice to have a more rich and complex flavour.
Beef Rendang: A saucy beef curry. The sauce is thick and not too runny. This dish is more akin to an Indian style beef bhuna curry, which the dish was inspired from. It’s not that spicy even though it might seem like it when you first see it.
Dessert
Fried banana with ice-cream: it’s banana fritters with ice-cream, need i say more? The fritter itself isn’t too sweet and pairs very well with the vanilla ice cream. One order comes with two banana fritters and a large scoop of ice cream. Even though two people can share it technically, you would be best to have the whole thing on your own.
We also ordered 3 servings of Hainan Rice and 3 servings of Coconut rice. each serving comes in a small bowl. Out if the two the coconut rice is the standout one because of the aromatics and the hint of sweetness; pairs well with majority...
Read moreStopped by this place with my family for mother's day recently, and it wasn't packed in a good way for us - sure, there were plenty of families at tables, but there was still plenty of room for their cat robot waiters to roam around delivering food too!
Basically every single thing we ordered was delicious. I can't be certain if the dish names match the photos but I guarantee everything is flavorful, and a sizable portion 😊
-[CHICKEN SATAY - 6 SKEWERS] $13.99 The chicken version was my favorite of the two kinds offered but both are tender, and flavorful! Meat falls off the stick easily if you're sharing them
-[BEEF SATAY - 6 SKEWERS] $15.99 Also a good thing to order especially if you're here with a group!
-[IKAN BAKAR] $28.99 ✨ This is deepfried, banana leaf, grilled stingray ✨ HEAR. ME. OUT. This was the first time I had ever eaten stingray, and even after I found out what it was, I was about to place another order to go LOL ✨ The spicy sauce it comes with on the slide is packed with flavor so make sure you give it a try
-[CRISPY SQUID IN FRAGRANT SPICES] $18.99 🦑 Can you say yum because I sure did after every piece of this squid I had haha
-[PENANG CHAR KWEI TAOW] $14.99 This is panfried flat noodles with seafood. I think they must utilize wizardry or something in that kitchen because they managed to panfry this without it being oily at all. Seasoning was also absolutely perfect
-[ROTI BEEF COMBO] $13.99 Yuuuuuuum is all I can say!
-[BEEF RENDANG] $20.99 You can think of this as almost like a roast beef in texture, but roast beef that has been stewed in a curry sauce! Suuuuuper tender because of how long it's stewed but for the same reason, every bite also oozes with flavor
-[BEEF W/SATAY SAUCE] $18.99 I thought we ordered the black pepper sauce version but honestly, this version was amazing so no complaints here 🤣
-[NONYA EGGPLANT WITH GREEN BEAN AND DRIED SHRIMP] $16.99 Haha I love eggplant and this one sounded up my alley! Glad it was 🍆
-!COLD WHITE COFFEE] $6.99 I really needed some caffeine in my system because I typically wake up at the time we were eating at. This coffee was a bit sweet for my liking but goodness me, I must have inhaled the coffee because even my family was shocked that one moment it was 100% a full glass, and the next, it wad empty ☕
📝 I literally took a photo of the receipt to make sure I could order everything again so take my advice if you're coming here for...
