A woman was waiting to select bagels from the bins She was coughing and had a cold She saw customers use the available tongs to select their bagels for purchase She then used her hands to select 12 sesame bagels and put them in a paper bag. I asked her to use the tongs because it was not hygienic. She ignored me. I asked a staff member to intervene & expressed my concerns for the safety of the food. The staff member appeared to talk to the woman. The woman then decided she did not want to purchase her bagels. She dumped her selected bagels back into the bins.
I asked the cashier/staff whether to throw away those bagels because:
The woman clearly had a cold The woman had used her hands to pick up the bagels The woman had contaminated the bagels The woman had returned all the bagels back into the bins after contaminating them. Other customers would be purchasing the bagels and could get very sick.
The staff member ignored my question and concern about the safety of the food She said that they cannot control if a customer wants to use their hands to pick up bagels. I told her that the issue is not about whether or not What a Bagel can control their customers.
The issue is that this customer was very sick, used her hands to touch the food in the open containers and returned the contaminated food back to the bins
The staff member was more concerned about her cashier tasks than listen to me. She repeated that they cannot control if a customer uses their hands to touch the food.
I repeated what I saw had happened and that they should throw out the bagels that were contaminated by the customer.
The staff member again ignored me.
I asked why What a Bagel was not concerned about the health safety of the other customers in the store.
Several other customers expressed their outrage and concern.
The staff did not remove the bagels and allowed other customers to purchase the...
Read moreHaven't been to a What A Bagel in years. Went to this location at Leslie & York Mills on Tues., Oct. 12 before closing at 6 pm. There was no end-of-day sale. I bought a dozen bagels, cream cheese and pastries. I wanted a bag of assorted bagels but all that was available was one kind of bagel by the bag. I opted to select my dozen from the baskets. I got a mix of poppy seed and poppy seed/sesame. The bagels are not great. They're dry and toast hard. I don't remember them being like this. Maybe the bagged ones are fresher? I can find better bagels in the freezer section at my grocer that are sprouted and with higher quality ingredients. I grabbed a container of cream cheese from the fridge only to realize after I got home that the one I selected was light cream cheese but it didn't taste light which was good. Cream cheese does seem premium with no modified milk ingredients. I also ordered 6 of their fancy pastries which I thought were over priced. I had to point at what I wanted, not knowing what anything is called because nothing is labelled. The patties were just okay and needed microwaving before consuming. They looked better than they...
Read moreI asked the woman at the sandwich station if their chicken salad had any traces of tuna in it (I have a severe allergy to tuna and I wanted to ask and make sure). After I asked, she shot me a look and responded “Tuna is with tuna and chicken is with chicken, that’s why they’re called that” looking at me and talking down on me like I was an idiot. She then proceeded to tell her coworkers around her and signalled to me, to which they all started LAUGHING at me and shooting me looks. Afterwards, I stated again that I was asking not out of idiocracy but because I had a severe allergy and was making sure for my own safety. They went on to serve me but continued to point at me and comment about what I asked, continuing to laugh at me. This kind of ignorance and stuck up bully-like behaviour is unacceptable. Me and my family are never returning because of this kind of treatment that they show their customers RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEIR FACES. This took place on May 2nd, 2025 around 11:55am. Your team should really do better and learn a thing or multiple about customer etiquette and how to be...
