I like Wick's. It's my favourite coffee shop in Marpole. The decor is nice and dark and relaxing and there are a lot of nice trees you can see from the window. They offer a large variety of specialty coffee and normal coffee. You can tell that this is a real business and not just a money laundering operation run by a twenty year old rich kid. They've been open for a while and still retain the same quality. The staff are friendly and you can tell they get along well with each other. They have only one bathroom, and sometimes the staff play annoying teeny bopper music. Overall though, the place has that genuine good vibe of a real coffee shop.
The only things that really bother me about this place are how obscenely loud it is, and how the customers aimlessly shuffle to and fro like zombies. It seems like the staff make a point of clattering the dishes as loudly as humanly possible. I'm surprised they don't break every single plate and bowl they touch. The acoustics are horrible in here, so you can here everything as if it was a concert hall. The more irritating a noise is, the more amplification it gets. It's so distracting when I'm trying to read. And for the customers, just get your coffee and sit down. Get all the things you need before you sit down, and then sit down.
For reading, the plush chairs in the back are best. The stools around the outside counter are uncomfortable, but they are the easiest to get. The regular chairs are okay. There's more seating here than there used to be,...
Read moreI went here for lunch with a group while working nearby and back a few nights later for a tea to go. Really enjoyed the food and drink here; they have some cool stuff. For I got an Avocado and Brie Croissant with Hibiscus Mayo, a Cloud Cheesecake, and a Red Latte. The croissant was nicely flaky and the proportions of filling to croissant were right. The hibiscus mayo sounded a little bit unusual with brie but I was too intrigued not to try it and it was great. They used just enough for the unique floral tartness to come through in every bite. The cloud cheesecake, which uses butterfly pea flower, was also really good! The butterfly pea flower gave it a really subtle underlying floral flavour and the texture was creamy but not heavy. The red latte (rooibos espresso) was a little stronger than tea-style rooibos lattes but very smooth. I just had a Blueberry Green tea on my next visit which was quite good, donât remember whose tea they use. I think the prices on everything were fair. The only issue I had was that I got an aloof feeling from the staff, in particular this one barista that was there both times. On my lunch visit, there was enough of a local crowd there that it was a welcoming hang, but when I went to grab a tea in the evening, it was empty save for one group and I kind of felt like I was walking into a club meeting that I hadnât...
Read moreI came to Wick's Cafe for lunch with my daughter as I had a parcel I needed to pick up in the same area.
Featured here: Matcha Latte Caramel Frappe Spinach Quiche Tuna Melt Sandwich Cloud Cheesecake
The Matcha Latte doesn't appear anywhere on their menu; however, I happened to overhear a customer in front of us ordering it so when I got to the front I inquired about it and the salesperson confirmed that they do serve Matcha Latte even though it's not written on the menu.
Tuna Melt Sandwich was just OK. My daughter and I both felt that the cheese was not very melted. It would have been better if they had left the sandwich in the panini press for just a little longer. We did enjoy the Spinach Quiche though.
Our slice of Cloud Cheesecake was the star of the show! I was floating on Cloud 9 while eating this cheesecake. Sharing this one slice with my daughter was hard. I wanted to have it all to myself. It was so incredibly light and fluffy; it felt more like a mousse cake than a cheesecake. Now I wanna go back and try some more flavors of their cheesecake. There were some very attractive looking flavors. Wonder if they are all that light and fluffy. I sure hope so!
