The food tastes great on the whole, but they were low on brisket with a 2 to 3 hour wait at lunchtime. We had party platter 4 but swapped half pulled pork for half brisket. It was a shame that they don't have beef ribs as some people don't eat pork. The cornbread was dry, but at least it had the authentic taste. The coleslaw was decent, and all the meat tasted excellent along with the fries.
One thing that is unfortunate, however, is that I had diar*a that night and again the second night with leftovers. I don't know why that is. Since the kitchen is so visible to guests, I did see that the chef/preparer dropped some of my pulled pork by the sink next to the cooker and took it up with tongs, placing it back in my bowl. It was right on the edge of the sink, a splashy place where people wash off germs, dirt, and harmful substances.
If you are big on atmosphere, don't dine in. The place is a bit low-end in appearance with a clear need to expand to a new, larger location. You're surrounded by stacks of dry products in boxes and skids of canned soda. The bathroom is clean, but the impression is that you're walking where you have no business being as the restaurant looks like a warehouse. One of the plates we received wasn't completely clean (sent back), the roll of paper towel on the table had bbq sauce all over the top and the salt and pepper shakers had BBQ sauce all on them including the very top. I found that trying to make do and scrape the BBQ sauce off of the holes in the salt shaker inadvertently pushed them into the bottle. No one should have their nails on a shared instrument anyway, so those should be cleaned after each guest. There was a group of teenagers (late teens) who kept speaking loudly and cursing, at that. You're so close to people that the farthest table from the farthest table is like 5 feet apart.
I liked that the establishment had TVs, but the one I was facing was off. It was so cramped in there that sometimes you want to divert your eyes from staring at people literally inches from you. Looking out the window helps, though, and there certainly are plenty of signs all over the walls to look at.
Anyway, the staff was accommodating. Next time, I will take it to go, and if I get stomach issues again, I will edit this 4-star "Food" rating to reflect that as I'll...
Read moreInspired by a certain other BBQ joint which has been in the news this past week and shall remain nameless, we went in search of good BBQ being served in a safe way, in a restaurant with an actual business licence, without a raving lunatic of an owner out front spreading alt-right misinformation and/or COVID-19.
Luckily, we found Memphis BBQ only 4 km away and it far exceeded these criteria in every way!
Having looked at the menu at home and again at the restaurant, I was fairly sure that I wanted to order "Party Pack 2" but hoped they would let me substitute the fries with onion rings. Lo and behold when I actually placed the order I was specifically asked "did you want that with fries?" before I could even ask about the substitution! So clearly people make substitutions on that item plenty.
Everything about this meal was delicious. However, the ribs were the star of the show. I worked Toronto Ribfest as a paid technician for the entertainment for a few years and I can honestly say these ribs were better than any I had there over the years (most of them for free, I might add! That's right, I was paid to eat ribs). I think when cooking at such massive quantities as Ribfest, things can get overlooked in the process. At Memphis BBQ, I can tell attention was paid to detail. The ribs had the perfect amount of smoke and BBQ flavour, fell off the bone with no effort at all, and were very meaty.
Everything else was great too, the smoked wings, coleslaw, beans, corn bread, and onion rings were all hits. The onion rings were a bit soft after a 10 minute car ride. This is a casualty of the pandemic, no fresh onion rings because everything is takeout. Next time around I would just pop them in my air fryer for a minute to crisp them back up.
The only real (and small) complaint I have is that they don't accept credit cards and this doesn't seem to be publicized on their website. This was a small set back in ordering for me. It could be a bigger setback for someone else. I would have been better prepared if this was mentioned on...
Read moreWe were in the area for a baseball tournament and my daughter-in-law googled your establishment on Saturday. When we met them at the ball diamond later they raved about the food and how delicious it was. We have a smokehouse in Kitchener have enjoyed going to as well, however, my son and grandson were, very impressed with your food and the taste and recommended you highly. The Sunday game was rained out and we were on our way home and decided to treat them to another meal there as we wanted to experience it ourselves. I am so glad that we made that decision. This has been the most delicious ribs and chicken that we have ever had , it would be nice if you would open your restaurant in Kitchener so we could enjoy this on a regular basis. We highly recommend that everyone checks out your restaurant when they’re visiting or even if they live nearby, we had the pleasure of having no electricity for a while, but it was handled really well with the staff and we at least had our food and just got to enjoy it while we waited for the power to come back . It wasn’t back on by the time it was time to pay, but we worked out an e-transfer. The cost of the food was very reasonable. There was seven of us and ended up taking home tons of leftovers for my husband‘s work tomorrow and for my other grandson who was at home. My husband and I have already discussed if we’re in the area that we will come back and try out The options you have for sauces. We had the honey garlic, and your house barbeque sauce both were...
