So disappointing!
I can not believe the positive reviews I just read about Salty's Drive Inn (unless perhaps their pizza is somehow worlds above the food I sampled)
This restaurant follows the formula of your common canteen in a sporting complex. The prices are high for what you're getting, they hire kids to work there, and cut costs on all the important ingredients. There is no love, nobody really cares, and you can taste it.
The flat and tasteless burgers are assembled with what look to be frozen patties from a wholesaler. The fries, although well cooked are similarly sourced frozen straight cuts. The bun is no saving grace.
This drive inn has a great location and looks like the kind of place you'd love to eat. It's such a shame that the food is so completely uninspired. If you think that this is tasty food, I implore you to make your way to a burger and fry joint where the owner actually works (at least sometimes) and is proud of the food that they serve. I realize that having a food establishment in a seasonal town would require a certain balance to function but there is quality food to be had in the area.
The staff were competent and friendly - they can not be blamed for the terrible business model. If you have arrived with friends or family and can't go somewhere decent, you could always get the deep fried mushrooms.
Seriously, would it really break the bank to get a fry press and use (perhaps fresh locally sourced) potatoes so the texture wasn't powdery in the middle and they would stay palatable even after being out of the fryer for more than a minute?
There's not a ton of 'eat out' options in Winnipeg Beach, but there are certainly...
Read morePoor service and unapologetic. Placed an order for 3 people (a burger, hotdog, fries and an individual pizza with drinks) and was told that one item could take 30-35 minutes but the rest would called when it's ready and they'd call my name when the last item was ready. We waited over an hour for the order and when asking the staff could not get an answer other than its not ready yet. Once we were finally fed up with waiting, seeing over 20 other orders placed after us being served (a couple with pizzas as well), and were ready to leave with a refund and no food, the staff and I think the supervisor or manager just tried saying it hadn't been an hour yet (we had placed our order around 5:50pm and it was around 6:50pm at this point, potentially a couple minutes less than an hour at most although arguably over an hour) and didn't even get an apology or reason for why it took so long with so many others being served before us. It honestly felt like they lost our order as the staff couldn't even find our order ticket until after several minutes of searching. Our food miraculously was ready when faced with the refund option.
The food quality was decent at best. The pizza was good minus the canned mushrooms. The burger was nothing special and the hotdog was okay. Their "famous iced tea" tasted like the powdered nestea you can buy at the grocery store. The fries were cooked really good but way over salted (I suppose I should've expected that from their name), I wouldn't recommend the fries to anyone with a...
Read moreI'm just going to get this off of my chest first as I sit in my car in the parking lot. There were 4 of us that ordered almost $60 of food for dinner and sat to eat at the picnic tables (which need some attention). 32C night and beautiful to sit outside. We finished just before 8:00 and went to stand in line to order ice cream for dessert behind 2 other couples. 8:00 comes and the woman behind tells us all that it's now 8:00pm, she's closed, will not serve us, and tells us to come tomorrow. I asked for clarity that she was not going to serve any of us even though we had been waiting in line for a while. She claimed that she thought we were waiting for orders and that she is closes at 8:00pm sharp, puts the closed sign in the window and closes up...right in front of us all standing there waiting to order. SUPER RUDE!!! I will call next week to speak with the owner and if she was it, there's no way I'll ever come back. On the food side, the French fries are packaged but were good. The perogies were good. The Big Boy hamburger was a hot mess. Mediocre meat patty that was rubbery with no flavour. The chili seemed to barely have hit the inside of the burger and was mostly spread around inside the packaging. Until the ice cream incident, our experience had been okay other than the quality of...
