This Boston Pizza serves food that is on par with what you would expect from the franchise, and so I am rating the food and atmosphere both as 5 and 4 stars respectively.
However, the service I received by my "waiter" Colin was disappointing. He did not take my order, he did not deliver my food, and he only checked in on me once. There must have been four different people who helped me during my single visit and for that I am grateful.
At the end of my meal, Colin told me that he will be receiving 100% of the tip that I paid; despite doing less than half of the work. (Did not greet himself, did not take my order, did not serve my food, barely checked in on me...)
It is important for me to know how my tip is being paid, whether it is a controlled tip or a direct tip and Colin told me that the tip I would be paying was in fact a direct tip directly to him. This means that it is his discretion as to how or if he allocates his tips to all of the people who contributed to my order, or if he will simply take the tip entirely for himself as he is under no obligation to redistribute the funds.
When asked about this, Colin told me that the waitress who assisted me (one of the other three people who also helped me during my meal, whether directly or indirectly), was a "good friend" of his and he will make sure that she gets her fair share. While I have no way of assuring that he will actually follow through with this, I do not care if Colin and the waitress who helped me were a married couple with six children, siblings, good friends, in a situationship or complete strangers - what is important to me is that the tips are going to all of the people who contributed, period.
While I do genuinely trust that Colin will redistribute the tip amongst the first person to assist me, and hope he does the same to the other two people who delivered and took away my food, I wish that there was a more formal way to distribute tips in these types of situations.
If Colin and the first waitress were not "good friends", who is to say that Colin would have incentive to share his hardly earned tip? I frankly have more sympathy to the chefs who only receive 4 percent of the bill while servers like Colin who may just do the absolute minimum are expected more than double, if not triple, that amount - and clearly, at least in the case of my visit today, for a fraction of the work.
