A Wonderful Surprise on the Woody Point Waterfront!
Nestled in the beautiful town of Woody Point within Gros Morne National Park, The Merchant Warehouse looks like a simple, pleasant spot from the street. But step inside, and you'll discover it's so much more. We were immediately charmed by a small, 50s-style retro diner at the entrance, which then opened up into a large, restaurant and wine bar. The best surprise of all was the discovery of a deck with about eight tables perched right on the water. On a hot summer day, it was the perfect place to be, sitting under an umbrella and taking in the stunning view of Bonne Bay.
I asked our friendly waitress for a "last meal on earth" recommendation, and she suggested either the Fish and Chips or one of their burgers. My wife went with the two-piece Fish and Chips and a glass of white wine, while I chose the Cheeseburger with Bacon Platter and a Pepsi. While we waited, we saw several orders of spectacular-looking onion rings being delivered to other tables, and they looked so good we had to add them to our order.
Our meals arrived promptly and everything looked delicious. My wife’s fish was two pieces of fresh, local cod with a wonderfully light and crispy batter, cooked to flaky perfection. (A helpful tip for anyone visiting the province: in Newfoundland, "Fish and Chips" exclusively means cod!). My cheeseburger was fantastic – a juicy, locally made patty topped with a thick slice of bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and raw onions on a soft, fresh bun. Both meals came with a side of perfectly golden, fresh-cut fries. The homemade onion rings were just as great as they looked.
If you find yourself in Woody Point, I can't recommend The Merchant Warehouse highly enough. With its surprising depth, waterfront view, and delicious, house-made food, it's a must-visit.
Bonus Tip: The beautiful deck is also...

We also shared a delicious vanilla milkshake and enjoyed the live music drifting out onto the patio. Craving that milkshake again, we returned the next day, choosing to sit in the retro diner portion of the restaurant. Our friendly host recommended the Merchant Crunch, which was a delicious, crunchy home-breaded chicken burger/sandwich. And, once again, the milkshakes knocked out socks off. Also, we were very impressed by the washrooms. The three accessible washrooms are gender neutral, and they are extremely clean, nicely decorated, and smell good. There is a third area of the restaurant, which has lots of seating and a bar atmosphere. The entire place is also very clean with a cool style. You absolutely have to stop here for a snack...
Read moreMerchant Warehouse Retro Cafe & Wine Bar in Woody Point is the kind of place that sneaks up on you—in the best way. Perched right on the edge of Bonne Bay, its waterfront patio offers views so stunning they almost steal the show from the food… almost. I sat there with a cold bottle of Iceberg in hand—Newfoundland’s own brew made with 25,000-year-old iceberg water—watching the sun dip behind the mountains, and it felt like time slowed down. Inside, the retro charm is warm and inviting, with live music adding a personal, homespun touch. The cod bites were a standout, and the partridge berry cheesecake? Pure magic. It’s not just a meal—it’s a moment, wrapped in salt air and...
