We are staying down on Seven Mile. Feeling a little adventurous, we followed the advice of other guests and took a public bus up to West Bay. We wanted to go to the Cracked Conch but I had no clue if the bus went near there or not. As we came into town, the driver asked where we wanted to go. When I hesitantly enquired if we might be dropped as close as possible to the Conch he smiled, waved has hand in the air as if holding a magic wand, and said: “Yeah mun!” Five minutes later we were dropped off right outside the restaurant ($2.50 each). We opted to sit out back as the sun was setting, in a very relaxed atmosphere, with no pressure to order quickly. My wife enjoyed one of the frozen cocktails (two actually) and I went through the local beers (White Tip and Bock, both delicious on draft) that I ordered in the smaller size (14oz) to avoid them heating up too much. It would be great if they served this size in real glasses rather than plastic cups. Pints were served in glasses. We ate the day’s special, Tuna Ceviche, which was good but not insane. Then we had Coconut Ceviche and Conch Fritters, which together were indeed insanely good. The Coconut was the young, fleshy type that lends itself great to being an innovative ceviche ingredient (see photo). The Conch was a wonderful balance of crispy and mushy, with a delicious peppery light spice to it. My wife declared them to be the best she had eaten (including amazing ones in Turks and Caicos). Service was very good. Attentive, friendly, enthusiastic. We left the restaurant very happy, but wondering how / where to catch the bus home. Before we had a chance to feel nervous, a bus came flying up from behind and pulled over. “You going to Seven Mile?” I asked. “Yeah mun!” We bundled in and were back in our hotel twenty...
Read moreWould never go back! From the moment we were seated our server was rude and condescending. I asked what kind of frozen drinks they served and in a very sarcastic tone, I was told that if I looked at the frozen drink menu, I would know. It was a windy day and one of the plastic menus from our table blew in to the water. Our server in her wonderful tone asked which of us was going to go retrieve it? While I understand that plastic in the ocean is an issue, it wasn't what was said but how it was said. Before her rude comment we planned to get the menu out of the water. Our meals were all less than average and that is saying it nicely. My daughter ordered a chicken sandwich that came with very brown, dried out something (all dark meat). My son and daughters went to the outdoor tiki bar area after lunch while my husband and I snorkeled (retrieving the lost menu) and heard the bartenders talking about the customers. When my son ordered the same drink that my daughter had, the bartender made a smart comment that if he said that earlier he would have been able to make a double batch. A bartender and waitress were overheard talking about the stupidity of Americans not being able to figure out the exchange rate. Unfortunately this wasn't just one person's lousy attitude, the servers and the bartenders seemed to feed off of each other in belittling their customers.... tourists...their livelihood!! I work in a career that tips are an important part of my income. I guess when your tip is already included in your bill, you can feel free to talk how ever you want to the customers. There are plenty of other places on the Island where you can have a great meal, snorkel, and even be treated with...
Read moreIn August 2018 we visited the Cayman Islands for a birthday and anniversary. We were refereed to The Cracked Conch by the hotel we were staying at. We had a party of 4 adults and our 10 week old baby. We were seated outside initially but shortly after we ordered our drinks decided it was best to move inside where it was cooler for the baby. We stood up and started gathering our things to head inside and our waitress who was moving at lightning speed rushed over with the tray of alcohol and attempted to bend down and grab the front of the stroller and lift it on to the step. In doing so she dumped the entire tray of alcohol into the car seat/stroller completely soaking it. Obviously not intentional, however, being that our baby was hardly 10 weeks old we expected to be compensated for the brand new stroller/travel system. We were told by the Manager Paul that the restaurant would take care of dry cleaning the car seat, which we had the hotel do as soon as we returned that evening. However, when the car seat was returned there are only certain pieces that could be removed and the whole car seat still wreaked of liquor and had a water logged line all the way around it where the pool of liquid sat.
After returning home, we ended up having to purchase another car seat and sent the receipt to Paul and have followed up numerous times with no response back.
All in all, the food was ok, but the customer service/ and care that was provided was extremely unsatisfactory. They did give us a free $15 dessert though to hopefully counteract the soaking wet $360 mess we had to strap our 10 week old baby into when we left the restaurant.. so at least...
