Easily the best restaurant in San Ramon in 2024. Katana’s menu is varied, the portions are large and the prices are very reasonable for food that is fresh, innovative, and always delicious. Most simply & importantly: they have a fantastic chef. I think of it as fusion or Asian-inspired, but they also have burgers, pasta, casados, steaks, and more, so there is really something for everyone.
Their thai shrimp is my favorite. The bowls are also excellent, with very fresh ingredients and rich sauces. I’ve gotten the fish tempura appetizer more than once and it has consistently been cooked perfectly and the portion is generous for an appetizer. Everything my friends and I have ordered has been “a hit.” Their drinks are also excellent. Large, freshly made batidos (fruit smoothies) are always outstanding - ask for their strawberry/watermelon/limon specialty, and their cocktails are great, too.
The staff are all wonderful, patient, and helpful. Don’t hesitate to flag down your server - I’ve noticed they are always friendly and eager to serve, but (in a style that seems common across Costa Rica), they won’t make you feel rushed by hovering or intruding frequently unless you call them over.
When the 2nd floor seating is open (dinner), I enjoy the upstairs tables that have a fresh breeze and overlook the street, but the 1st floor tables are comfortable too.
Bonus - it’s located on the corner across from a public parking lot so there’s never a worry about searching for a safe spot on the street.
If you haven’t tried Katana’s yet, bump them to the top...
Read moreWe rolled into Katana’s in San Ramon and it was a little busy, but hey, they let us sit wherever we wanted. Service was kind of on Costa Rica time—which means a bit slow, but that’s just how it goes here. The margaritas? On point. 🍹👌 I had a burger with fries, and my wife went for the patacones with shredded beef. At first, we were like, “Uh oh… did we pick the wrong spot?” But just like every place here, the food showed up, and all doubts were erased.
My burger was delicious. The only thing was the fries were a little on the cold side and there weren’t many—maybe they were rationing fries? 🧐 But seriously, the food was so good I forgot about the whole waiting part. My wife’s patacones were also a hit!
I’m giving them a solid 4 stars because the food and drinks were worth it, and I’m definitely giving them another shot. With a little more fries and a warmer batch, they’re easily looking at a 5-star future! 🍔🌟
Update: We gave Katana’s another go, and this time they’re getting the full 5 stars! The fries? Hot and plenty – crisis averted. I had the burger again, and it was just as awesome as the first time. My wife went for the chicken burger, and it was juicy, crunchy, and everything in between.
They totally redeemed themselves. Definitely a must-visit if you’re in San...
Read moreFirst of all, I’m a home chef so I’m super critical. But I must say that coming from San Jose, which is where I live, I was very surprised by the quality of the food here. The salmon carpaccio was delicious. On a scale of one to 10 it was like an 8.2. Then we had some fried potato ball with meat on top. That was a little difficult to eat, but it was very delicious. I rate that a solid 7. 8. I also had a steak that was not the ribeye. It was the other steak which was a lower grade of meat, but they prepared it very well. I had the vegetables with it, which were delicious. We also had a house salad with chicken, which was done perfectly. I graded that 8.5. We had a piece of passionfruit cake, which was delicious and I agree that a 7.8 to a 7.9. The bill was very reasonable, considering the quality. I hope you don’t think I’m too critical but overall, I would recommend this and it competes with some of the finer restaurants in San Jose. My tonic was made perfectly, but the martini wasn’t very good because they don’t know how to make martinis in Costa Rica. But that’s OK. Our weight service was very good. They were very attentive and mindful of us. That’s...
