The small town of El Limón in the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, just a few hours’ drive from the Capitol Santo Domingo, is a quaint, homey and a friendly community in the midst of one of the most lush, green, pure, untouched and natural wonders of the Caribbean. Within its hills, valleys and white sandy beaches, strewn with local fishing boats, thatch huts, galvanized steel roof, incredible fresh foods, the town is chalk full of shops, eateries and craft shops, one knows you’ve arrived at an oasis paradise of calm and tranquility – just watch out for missing pothole covers. Such is the exuberant, openness and open-air ambience at Porto by Mosquito just a few miles out of town. A restaurant of incredible attitude and uniqueness. Their service is impeccable, the attention to detail is beyond reproach, and the environment and décor incredible, the food is superb. My wife and I have travelled many, many miles, and many, many places, and there are very, very few places we’ve experienced that can parallel or even come close to the incredible attention to detail, the service and especially the meal we’ve experienced here. First, the location is as a giant tiki hut fronting a beautiful landscape to the Caribbean Sea. All the design and atmosphere are real… real fruit art, real palm proms, real wood, real people, real atmosphere. The food, wow, the food was terrific! We started with appetizers of an incredible Ceviche Peruano Clásico of fish of the day marinaded en jugo de Limón, some very strong red onion, fresh cilantro, dried maize and just vaguely but perfectly spicy – just right. We leisured on the Tacos picante de camarones con salsa de Mango… hmmm delish. We went on to enjoy their tacos de camarones salteados, also in a mango sauce but beautifully spruced with lemon, cilantro and onions in mild yet flavorful picante salsa, and sautéed spicy shrimp tacos, also in mango, cilantro, onion and lime salsa, with jalapeño on corn tortillas. And finally, dessert - a fabulous artisanal-prepared coconut ice cream they call ‘Helado Coco Tai’ served in jícara (gourd) Artisanal Coco Tai rich and smooth coconut ice cream served in the coconut shell. My wife’s birthday was a success… a beach front sand with tranquil waters rippling on the shore, with the sea breeze wafting the air around us, and an open air and high-ceilinged architecture abounding in open, rustic yet romantic surrounds. Thank you staff, management and chefs for one of our most memorable moments. Muchisimas...

Read moreSuch a stunning location and beautifully designed building. Love all the woodwork and the fantastic wood furniture. The beach is super enchanting with water. You can just walk straight out in. Truly a five star location, which is worth coming to just to have a drink on the patio. Walk in from the beach and rinse off with their very nice showers in front of the restaurant as well as a conveniently located foot wash when you climb up the stairs from the beach.
Three dishes that really stood out to us was the served only on the weekend chicken and rice and bean dish (pollo guisado). Super good deal! Garlic, shrimp, or exceptional. But the real gem was the Pescado al Macho con Camerones.
The problem with this lovely restaurant is the staff. The most lack luster, we could care less group of young people. First day we came, the group of 8 plus ignored us as they played on their phones and laughed with each other at the bar area. Bar area was dirty, garbage on floor, flies. Nobody cared. During the meal had to get up three times and go hunt down a waiter to help us. They just ignore you. Customer service is very lacking here. But that is true in a lot of the restaurants we visited in the D. R. Really spoils...
