El Gallego — Restaurant in Santo Domingo

The restaurant is located in a large villa, with a corresponding terrace, garden and pool areas. The dining areas are situated in various large rooms that provide a more intimate feel than the average restaurant space. There is also a small bar area. The menu offers a comprehensive selection of Spanish and in particular Gallego specialities, including all varieties of meat as well as seafood. There is an extensive tapas menu, which offers an alternative to more traditional starter/main/dessert option, I opted for a series of tapas, all of which were excellent. Being a Sunday lunchtime it was packed and not having a reservation, we had to wait a while for a table, but sat at the bar where we were able to order some plates to share as well as drinks whilst waiting. Overall the atmosphere, food and service was top notch, but if you are at all impatient, I would certainly advise making a booking at the weekends. This place is amazing. Yes, a bit on the expensive side, but to be fair we ordered way more food than we should have (the portions are huge!). The grilles octopus tapas plate was one of the best I’ve ever had (and I’ve eaten EVERYWHERE). The seafood tapas was incredibly fresh and delicious. The Bacalao empanada was melt in your mouth. And the Serrano croquettes were delicious. Service was actually the best we’ve had in Santo Domingo! I was impressed. They were attentive, fast, and thoughtful. Sangrias were light and fresh. Great tapas! This place is an old spanish mansion in the heart of Gazcue it is few blocks off of el malecon. I am still discovering wonderful spots like it all over Santo Domingo. The place is owned by the same person who owns Turos who I reviewed a bit back. The food was as expected cook perfect my guest enjoyed theirs as well pricing was on the expensive side and usually I am ok with that but knowing the level of decor at Turos this place is lagging big time come on you know you can do better than that chairs are old and rickety tables are right behind them, just because it is old Spanish doesn't mean things have to be same inside.
