Review of Castana - A Hidden Gem in Cairo

If you’re looking for an exceptional dining experience in Cairo that brings a taste of authentic Levantine cuisine with a modern twist, Castana is an absolute must-visit. I recently had the pleasure of dining there, and as a Canadian visiting Cairo, I was blown away by both the atmosphere and the incredible Syrian food they offer.

The patio at Castana is an absolute standout. It’s beautifully designed with lush greenery and a relaxed ambiance that invites you to settle in and enjoy a long, leisurely meal. Whether you’re visiting during the cooler evening hours or a bright, sunny afternoon, the outdoor space feels like an oasis in the heart of Cairo. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a meal with friends or family, especially when paired with a refreshing shisha. The comfortable seating and well-thought-out layout provide a great balance of privacy and connection, so you never feel too cramped or distant from the experience.

What truly made the evening special, however, was the level of service. The staff at Castana were incredibly attentive without being intrusive. From the moment we arrived, they made us feel welcome, and throughout the meal, they checked in just enough to ensure everything was perfect. They were knowledgeable about the menu, offering excellent recommendations and making sure we had everything we needed.

Now, let’s talk about the food — it was nothing short of spectacular. As a Canadian who’s had the pleasure of experiencing some great Levantine dishes back home, I can confidently say that Castana serves some of the best Syrian food I’ve had outside of Syria. The hummus was creamy and perfectly seasoned, and the muhammara (Syrian red pepper dip) was incredibly flavorful, with the right balance of smoky and spicy notes. The grilled meats were perfectly cooked, especially the kebabs, which were tender and juicy, full of that authentic Syrian flavor that’s so hard to replicate. Every dish we tried felt incredibly fresh, with vibrant flavors and textures that made each bite more satisfying than the last.

The shisha at Castana was also top-notch, and it complemented the meal perfectly, enhancing the relaxed vibe of the evening. The staff made sure that the experience was as enjoyable as possible, adjusting flavors and smoke density to our liking.

As someone who’s been fortunate enough to travel and explore various cuisines around the world, I can say that Castana truly impressed me. It’s rare to find a place outside Syria that captures the essence of authentic Syrian cuisine as well as Castana does. The combination of a beautiful setting, attentive service, and exceptional food makes it a standout in Cairo’s already vibrant restaurant scene.
