Unwelcoming and Rude Aug 2025 • Couples We recently tried to make a reservation at this restaurant and were left extremely disappointed by the rude and unprofessional behaviour of (what we assume) was the owner or staff. Upon arriving at lunch time, we found no one at reception . We waited outside with our 2 well behaved labradors under the canopy as it was raining slightly. We went in again-still no one came to greet us so we decided to find the phone number to call them hoping someone would pick up. Instead, a women suddenly appeared through a side door where we were sitting and abruptly asked “yes, do you want something?” -not exactly the welcome you’d expect. We smiled and explained that we would like to make a reservation for the that evening-perhaps for the following evening as we were staying in Santenay sharing our time with friends, we had a house in Chablis for 17 years so have a lot of contacts in the area and always have a lot of people to see. Before we could finish she cut us off with “we are full. Goodbye” We were a bit stunned and stayed seated for a moment, only to hear her repeat “Goodbye- not once, but twice more, making it very clear we weren’t welcome. We left feeling judged and dismissed which is very unfortunate for the restaurant as we will never try to make a reservation again with L’Ouillette, which btw my husband has eaten in there a few times with a few of our local friends and enjoyed the food very much, maybe it was her day off on those occasions. On the bright side the restaurant next door “Le Terroir” is absolutely lovely-warm friendly and accommodating with great food. There’s no need to tolerate rude or unwelcoming service when there are far better alternatives just steps away. Would not recommend for...
Read moreJust completed an extremely enjoyable meal at this family-owned restaurant in a small hotel they also manage.
The husband created our enjoyable and creative dishes while Mlle ran the front, making us feel like guests in her home. Our three course meal (entree, plat + dessert / cheese) was well executed and a great value, accompanied by 3 amuse + mignardises.
We each ordered duck/quail in pastry as an entrée; the accompanying sauce was amazing and something, my wife will desperately try to re-create at home.
For our mains I enjoyed turbot in a carrot-based sauce and puree while my wife (who doesn't typically enjoy chicken) was in love with her poulet two-ways. Our dessert and cheese selections were equally enjoyable.
All in all, this was a wonderful meal and again, truly enjoyed the warm service received throughout our meal. We’ll certainly return when we next visit Burgundy, and will consider staying at their hotel/B&B based on their hospitality and location. Please check them out, it’s well worth the Michelin recommendation they have...
Read moreSome great traditional dishes with a modern twist (Jambon Persille with Dijon ice cream; deconstructed lemon tart), very good Coq au Vin. Great food until the cheese course which they really skimped on, tiny cuts and although we know 3 is the magic number for cheese selections in France usually they'll at least tempt you with another. Service was efficient but icy and the whole place felt a bit snooty with an older clientele. Still, one of only two restaurants that we saw in the main square of Santenay, and the only one that was open the night we were there. If you're in the same situation it's...
