We wanted a friendly, quiet, simple, inexpensive hotel, that had received good reviews (thank you, Tripadvisor!) in the town of Prats-de-Mollo-la Preste. Le Costabonne was just what we had hoped for -- AND we received a bonus on our arrival: I had requested a lower room, because I have been having back problems, which are exacerbated by climbing many stairs. The Costabonne responded immediately to my request, alerting me that they only had a room available on the third floor. Keep in mind that in France, what they call the third floor is what we call the fourth floor! But they promised that if they had a cancelation, they would put us lower down. What a joy and surprise on our arrival to be given the key to a room on the FIRST floor. It was quite a large bedroom, containing both a double bed and bunk beds. The room was simple, but completely adequate. The mattresses were thick and firm. My husband complained that there were only duvets on the beds, for which the room was too warm. He would have liked the option of a sheet or something light that he could throw over himself. The duvets, however, were lovely, soft, and spotless white. We could have cooled the room by opening the windows overnight, but there were people talking and laughing outside, and the excellent windows when closed, completely blocked all of the outside noise. | The bathroom was larger than some hotel rooms we've been in! It looked newly renovated. There was a closet on one wall, half for hanging clothes, half with shelves. There was a long, large bathtub, which also had a shower attached, with two packages of shampoo on the side. There was a bidet, a sink, of course, with a packet of soap and two cups. Beside this, there was a hair dryer. And there was a very modern looking toilet, with bright blue lights on the side. This made a lovely night light. BUT . . . what I could not find was a way to flush the toilet! I finally concluded that these lights must be highlighting the flush button, but I couldn't find it, and was afraid to push too hard around there, for fear of breaking the lights. I finally called my husband in to rescue me. YES, the blue lights marked the button - which wasn't exactly a button. Even after knowing this, I found I didn't have the strength to activate this, and thus, like a child, I had to call in my husband every time I wanted to flush the toilet!| At the end of the hall, through a heavy door, there was a lounge with a sofa and some easy chairs, plus a small shelf of books. This led out to a deck with lounge chairs for those who might want to sunbathe. But if you have small children, keep an eye on them: there was something like a very narrow moat along one one side.| Breakfast was simple but the crowd eating in the breakfast room seemed very happy. They had baguettes of bread and also mini croissants, plain and chocolate, plus - of course - packets of jam, butter, etc. There were also little containers of yogurt and some fresh grapes. To drink, they had orange juice, coffee, milk, hot water and tea bags and packets to make cocoa.| The proprietors were very nice...
Read moreTravelling on motorbikes from Nice to Barcelona, Le Costabonne was used as a stopover for one night. Easy to locate on the main road. Reception/booking is in the bar area.||No lift so difficult getting to the top floor 3/4 flights of stairs with motorbike luggage. Room clean but basic - lino flooring which felt a bit sticky. Nice clean bed linen though. Strange bathroom with old pink suite and black tiles, very low shower and no shower curtain. Between the group of friends we had different styles of baths/showers ! If you like a bath then make sure you ask for a large one ! Breakfast was in the bar area and the owner/manager was a bit stressed trying to do everything on his own. Very basic breakfast, bread and jam with Orange juice and coffee but was only 6 euro. ||Nice little town though with some reasonable bars/restaurants.||The hotel did have a lounge and and external patio area [useful for smokers but not...
