Decided to stay at this charming guest house/restaurant in Bergues for one night to break our journey home from visiting family in Germany, as a result of reading recent Tripadvisor reviews. This establishment is fully deserving of the accolades of previous guests, being close to the centre of what looks to be a beautiful historic fortified town, surrounded by a moat. Sadly for us, the weather/traffic made for a later arrival than planned and we were unable to explore as we would have liked. As others before us have said, this accommodation is a diamond that we wish would remain our secret, but deserves the recognition as being a lovely place to visit even for more than just one night on your way to/from Dunkirque ferry terminal. We reserved a superior double room, which was large and decorated in a lovely french style. With the historic character of sloping bare floorboards, the most comfortable bed, and a well appointed en-suite. The room rate included a nice continental breakfast the following morning at a time agreed on arrival. There doesn’t appear to be private parking for the establishment (not that we asked), as we were more than happy to park on the quiet side street directly in front of the Hotel, this could cause an issue during busier months when travelling with a lot of luggage. We were greeted on arrival and access/room and facilities were fully understood, as we have limited French, and we were asked if we would like a reservation for the restaurant, which we can now also rate very highly. Dunkirque ferry terminal is around a 30 minute journey from here, and we feel that this little gem should not be missed, in fact, we hope to make it our go to place whenever we travel through. We appreciated the warm hospitality, beautiful room, and are very sad that our late arrival combined with the bad weather put a halt to any exploration of the town, but this will definitely be rectified on our next visit. Au revoir, à bientôt, merci...
Read moreNEVER AGAIN ! Lots of places inside, divided into several rooms, and a rear terrace for sunny days. But the reception is severe, devoid of politeness, of smile. The decoration is most bizarre, probably inspired by the traumas of the interior designer who took care of it and the tragedies that the city has suffered ? In one of the premises, the bricks are bare. This is often done but here the oversized frames around the doors, windows and in the corners make a stark contrast, it made us think of a bombing aftermath. Allusion to the tumultuous past of the city ? In addition, these large frames are painted mauve or pink mixed with purple, in short, priestly colors. The weight of religion ? An ode to the city's abbots who ruled the region with an iron fist for centuries ? Another room has one wall completely lined with imitation leopard skin. Do they want to make us feel guilty for colonization, for slavery ( which has enriched French ports ) ? In short, we feel overwhelmed here, people speak little or low, no good atmosphere, like in a mortuary ! The seats, very posh, are very uncomfortable : too low in relation to the table. The cooking is not worth the trip, in our opinion it is not really made in the house : we find exactly the same small pieces of meat with the same watery sauce elsewhere, it is practical because vacuum-packed, and the vegetables clearly come from Bonduelle's pro range. The house is also a “ maison d’hôtes ”. We did not see the rooms but the scary landlady inquired one of the guests with an obvious lack of courtesy about his satisfaction. The client seemed too impressed to...
Read moreWe stayed in Bergues on a weekend trip to France and Belgium with our friends from Scotland. We had booked in but had omitted to confirm our exact check-in time so when we arrived at around 3pm local time (the time given on the booking details), we were unfortunately unable to get in. We would therefore recommend that you confirm your approximate arrival time to the hotel in advance!||However, this was rectified quickly and the proprietor (Valerie) was extremely apologetic and even gave us a complimentary drink to make up for it! ||We had booked two double rooms but unfortunately, my husband was unable to join us. The rooms exceeded our expectations - my friends had the larger room which was beautifully furnished. My room, although a but smaller, had a lovely spacious bathroom and was also superbly decorated and furnished. ||There was a complimentary drinks fridge in each room containing soft drinks and beer. There was also a decanter of port and sweets!||The breakfast was buffet style but was more than ample with a vast array of fresh bread, croissants, fruit, jams etc.||Before we left, Valerie kindly gave us a bottle of beer for my husband (and one for my friend!) which had been brewed in the proprietors' own micro-brewery.||I will most definitely be returning to Bienvenue Chez Nous with my husband, in fact, we have already booked for our friend's birthday...
