It's unfortunately not possible to reply to the owner's reply, so I need to write a new comment. Again 3 points as the terrace is nice, but we were not happy at all how we were treated being vegan. There was no starter only made with vegetables, and even taking meat, fish, cheese etc. out it left us with green leaves. When we asked the waitress if we could have a simple salad (green leaves, tomatoes, carots for example), we were told that this was not possible, which left us quite speechless. The owner replied to this that we should call in advance, announcing that we're vegan. I'm not sure why one need to announce hours in advance for a simple salad. We first ordered the only vegetarian dish on the menu which was a quinoa galette with truffle oil, cream artichokes etc., doing a compromise as the cream obviously contained dairy. The waitress came back telling us that there was meat in the galette. In a vegetarian dish! So we cancelled the order, what the owner apparently also resented, given his reply regarding this. Maybe he should train his waitresses, also as she didn't know what sesame is... I'm allergic to it and asked whether there was any sesame in the dish, and she had no clue what sesame could be. Some training could do some good! And yes, in the end we ordered as we were tired and didn't want to switch restaurants, and we would have been fine with this decision, but unfortunately the dish was really tasteless, the quinoa cooked without any salt etc. So we didn't have a nice evening at all, not feeling welcome and not being treated like a client. We understand that vegans are not the majority of clients, but they are there, and other traditional French restaurants treat them with much more respect. The 'Physalis' in Prévessin for example. We're always served a tasty dish there and don't have to announce ourselves hours in advance if we want a salad as a starter... Food...
Read moreThe restaurant is located in an old train station building in GEX, which has been beautifully renovated while still maintaining the original structure and charm of the building. Inside the restaurant, there are photos showcasing what the building used to look like when it was a functioning train station, which I found to be a nice touch. It's great to see old buildings being preserved and repurposed, rather than being abandoned and forgotten.
I was impressed with their level of service and quality of food. The staff were polite and attentive, and the service was efficient. The attention to detail in the food presentation was noticeable, and the dishes were made with fresh ingredients that were delicious. Overall, it was a great dining experience, and I would recommend this restaurant to others looking for a good meal in GEX. The menu is in both French and English , reservation can be done by email too and normally they reply fast...
Read moreWe visited restaurant La Gare Gex on our stop back home from Italy. Beautiful area by the way.
Without reservation we tried to get a table early in the evening. With our passe sanitaire, we got lucky. The seating outside is terrific, at the old trainstation of Gex, with old rails still lying there. The reception was very welcoming. The servers were struggling a bit with English, since our French was not reassuring enough. One lady speaking English well carried us through the evening.
The Chateau Rousset I cannot remember, but it was quite alright. Salmon tartare was good, the burger terrific but the magret canard a bit too tough (thick slices made it more difficult to chew). The sorbet to finish was a great ending. The menu offers a wide range of dishes, also for the younger guests. See...
