Good but not great
There are not a lot of places to dine in Sauternes. I was fortunate enough to dine at the most opulent restaurant in the region and was hoping Auberge would be a nice contrast to a two star dinner the night before.
Had the homemade foie gras and Spanish steak for dinner. The foie gras was decent and the accompanying glass of Sauterne was extremely generous. My dining partner and I ordered different cuts of steaks and both came out tough and cardboard. Nice presentation but the meats were so tough and chewy it was difficult to eat. I have had dozens of steaks in France over the years and never came across one quite like these. One tough steak is acceptable, but two are not. My steak was ordered âĂ pointâ which is medium rare and came out medium well.
The setting was beautiful and so picturesque in the heart of Sauternes. The staff was helpful and tried their best - it didnât take long for the restaurant to get...

Wine tastings wouldn't be complete with delicious food to go along with it. The Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey suggested this small, rustic restaurant for a lunch before the next tasting. We would have completely missed this small restaurant if we didn't get their recommendation!
We started off with two glasses of Sauternes and some fois gras. Then we moved onto steak tartare and a fish. I love it when they put the egg on top so you can mix it in the meat yourself. The cheese and toast on the side melted in my mouth, but then contrasted with a crisp crunch. I have no idea what was in the mayo, but I couldn't get enough of it. The fish has a story in itself - we got to watch it being cooked in the furnace!
A filling lunch before our next tour and tasting. I would absolutely come back again. Not a place...
