Despite some initial resistance, I agreed to go for a duck dinner – at a restaurant in Nice specialized in exactly that (Restaurant La Route du Miam, 1 Rue Molière). With great skepticism, I entered the restaurant, located in a neighborhood far removed from the usual tourist routes. But: as a passionate duck eater, I left it just under two hours later – thoroughly impressed.
The experience was incredible! The extremely hospitable couple who own the restaurant open their charming little place three evenings a week, from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. The lady of the house takes care of the guests in the most endearing way; her husband – a native Belgian – is responsible for the kitchen, which is in full view of the few guest tables. As someone who has dined in some of the finest restaurants around the world for many years, I must say that this evening was a true encounter with the benchmark of all things “duck.” The meat was tender and juicy, the skin slightly crispy and seasoned with finesse. The delicious fried potatoes were served – as they should be – golden-brown from a cast-iron pan. And the accompanying foie gras also met the highest standards of quality.
Even though we were in a rather average neighborhood, the outstanding quality of this little restaurant clearly seems to have gotten around. You won’t get in without a reservation. And almost all of the few tables were taken by international guests. During the course of the relatively short evening, a nearly personal atmosphere developed between the hosts and the guests. They checked in frequently to make sure everything was perfect. Even small special requests were met promptly and graciously.
We won’t forget this evening anytime soon! And it won’t be long...
Read moreThis restaurant is immaculate and truly the best in Nice. Marie (the waitress and the wife of the chef) warmly welcomes you to her quaint family restaurant which probably could seat around 10-20 people , and explains the menu and the history of the restaurant while Jean-Michel (her husband) cooks in the background. The tables are close, the people are few, and the chef can be heard and seen cooking, while he asks the guests an occasional question or cracks an occasional joke. There are only four items on the menu of which two are meals that offer a huge portion of duck. The duck is the specialty. It is cooked in an amazing too-good-to-be-true, must-be-a-family-secret way and comes with incredibly crunchy and tasty potatoes, foie-gras (which in another restaurant will be 20 euro by itself) and the filling of the duck on the side. The dish is some of most decadent meat I have ever eaten together with an unreplicable sauce and generous side-dishes. The wine they offered us was good for our budget (as students) and for desert they offered us some authentic ice cream. Honestly, the duck dish is the star and you don’t need anything else to have an unforgettable experience. After everyone’s food is served and the guests have finished their meals, Jean and Marie sit down and talk with the guests and the setting feels even more like a family get-together. One could stay in La Route du Miam for hours and enjoy food, wine, atmosphere and company, all together, and all equally. At the end, the hosts will bid you farewell and as you walk away, a feeling of satisfaction due to what had just occurred will overwhelm you. For years to come you will not allow yourself to forget. Strongly recommend this gem of...
Read moreI came here 9 years ago when I first visited Nice, realised it was the best restaraunt in all of France (potentially Europe) and vowed that I would return one day whenever I came back to Nice - and I did and it was EXACTLY the same amazing experience I had from the first time round!
Marie and her husband are incredibly warm and kind hosts, who welcome you into their small cosy restaraunt with open hearts and outstanding cooking. My fiancée and I are normally skeptical about getting duck - we’ve rarely had a good one outside of the Hong Kong bbq kitchen type, but we were absolutely blown away by the perfection we were fed on a plate! Incredibly crispy on the outside, and juicy on the inside, with DELECTABLE creamy foie gras that melts on your tongue and crispy small potatoes cooked in duck fat that are to DIE FOR. I dreamt about those potatoes for 9 years and I’m going to keep dreaming of them!
The whole atmosphere was so great - we got talking to the other guests there, and by the end of the night we were drinking with them and Marie and her husband, it was such a lovely intimate experience with the finest quality food. Our favourite meal this trip by far!
Would 1000% recommend coming here even if it’s a little out of the way - totally worth it! I booked via Facebook but you can also do this by calling or emailing.
Thank you for such an...
