It was a Tuesday (August 15) night at 7.45 pm when we presented at the front door of the restaurant. A woman left a group of staff milling around chatting at the bar to come and ask if we had a reservation. We didn’t we said. ´We are complet’ she said as we glanced around at a large number of empty tables with only about one in six or seven that we could see that were occupied. The people at the closest table looked as surprised as we were for us to be asked this question. It looked like a very quiet night. The staff were certainly not busy. It was strange. We had earlier left our boat moored in the port directly below the restaurant, to cross the bridge into town for a walk and had passed by a number of restaurants on the other side of the river but had later come back looking forward to dinner at this one. ´We are complét’ she said without any apologies or further explanation. So we left surprised and disappointed and, not wanting to walk back across the bridge and choose another restaurant in town, went home to our boat moored just below, to find something to eat. But it had been a lie. They were not ‘ complete’ as when we checked at various intervals the numbers were still very low. No huge crowd arrived, or left later. We were clean, well dressed, and respectful. A couple who had eaten and left while we were there were not nearly as well dressed. In fact they were scruffy. There seemed to be no explanation that we could imagine for being turned away. It was baffling, and people we spoke to , such as the port capitaine and other boat owners also thought it very strange and unusual. Some boat owners assured us we had missed nothing saying the food was not very good and it was overpriced. If someone bothers to read this, please supply us the explanation we should have, at the very least, been supplied with on the night. It was very poor form for the staff member to simply say ´complét’ with no further explanation. And it would have been pointless to question, after such an unfriendly abrupt and final turn away. We were no longer in the mood to stay after they had decided they did not want...
Read morePros: Good environment and the french cuisine here are great! We love everything they served. Very good taste and will definitely be back if I have chances. When it's not busy the time for serving is also not long, for us the bread blanket arrived fast and the first dish arrived about 15 mins after.
Cons: Note that only a young waiter can understand a little English, aside from him nobody understands English. The menus they provided are in French. Most staff have a good attitude and the service is good, but just one waitress seems to be unhappy and indifferent.
Conclusion: If you guys know the French language this is a perfect place. It seems it's mostly local people come here and they like it. You'd better make a reservation in advance if you want the outdoor seats on the bank. Also there's only one vegetarian main course (which is...
Read moreWhat a little (big!) gem this is! We had an excellent 8 course family Christmas lunch there. Having been at Auberge St Walfried before (the father, as far as I know), we have been delighted by the quality of the food. Inspired cuisine - from the amuse bouche to the omlette norvegienne dessert. Entrance area a bit underwhelming but main dining room is beautiful, modern design with lots of traditional "fayence". Service is informal and efficient. They also did a nice kids lunch which helps for the little ones (also on cost). One of the best restaurants in the area that is really delightful to have. We will...
