Café Kettern — Restaurant in Bernkastel-Kues

What a miserable little place with a limited selection. Although in all fairness the waitress was very friendly and tried her best. But no cappuccino in a place which calls itself it a “Café”? You would imagine at least a couple of options, no? But the only possibility was good old fashioned filter coffee which I don’t generally mind but the one which was delivered was bitter and close to undrinkable. Some parts of Germany live in a time warp and this is one of them. Payments only in cash. The Café has so much potential, location is great, ample parking, pleasant terrace but the stodgy, tasteless cakes and bitter coffee is really disappointing. The last little grumble is that there was apparently nothing savoury to eat. Not even a filled Brötchen or something similar at around lunchtime. “Let them eat cake”! If I pass through here again I’ll make sure to stop in another village or bring a packed lunch...

Somehow we arrived at a bad time, not that the bakeries did not taste well, but at the time of payment we discovered that we had arrived in a past time as the place only accepted cash payments. As being from a time zone with cashless payments generally accepted, we not only became speechless, but cashless in a broad sense. The fact is that Piesport does NOT have a bank nor any ATMs. As the proprietor (rudely) did not accept any other solutions, not even a bank transfer, I had to travel back to the next small town to find an ATM enabling me to pay the mere 13 euros. Add to the stress it was a very hot day spending travelling around to find a way of obtaining cash. The tourist info suggested going to the supermarket and buy something and request extra cash - that failed too as they only accepted German debit cards - talking about coming to a...

Unfreundlich! Nie wieder! Wir wollten gestern mit 3 Erwachsenen und 3 Kindern dort einkehren, um Kaffee zu trinken und Kuchen zu essen. Wir trugen alle selbstverständlich unsere Mund-Nasen-Bedeckungen und gingen zügig und mit Abstand zu anderen Kunden zu einem großen freien Tisch ganz hinten im Café. Am Tisch waren 9 Stühle und der Tisch stand, wie alle anderen besetzten Tische im Raum, mit ca. 1,5 m Abstand zu den anderen Tischen und Gästen. Unglücklicherweise hatten wir das Hinweisschild nicht gesehen, welches dazu aufforderte, vorne zu warten, bis ein Tisch zugewiesen würde. Wir hatten noch nicht mal alle Platz genommen, da kam schon die Bedienung und raunzte uns unfreundlich an, dass wir hätten warten müssen und das das so nicht ginge. Ich erwiderte darauf, dass man das Schilder leider übersehen habe und der Tisch doch gut sei (zumal kein anderer Tisch frei wäre, an dem 6 Personen hätten sitzen können). Daraufhin wurden wir in eine äußerst ruppige Diskussion mit der Dame verwickelt, dass so kein Mindestabstand von 1,5 m zu den anderen Kunden einzuhalten sei und wir nun am besten gehen sollten. Sie wolle schließlich gesund bleiben. Somit wurden wir ohne Kuchen und Kaffee des Hauses verwiesen und mit 3 Kindern quasi raus in den Platzregen geworfen. Es hätte genug Platz gegeben und zur Not hätte man mit den 3 freien Stühlen auch irgendwie rücken können, mehr Platz zu schaffen. Fazit: So etwas habe ich in meinen 40 Jahren noch nie erlebt! Den anderen Rezensionen zufolge scheint die Unfreundlichkeit der Chefin bzw Bedienung auch schon vor Corona ein Problem...
