I ventured in here as a lost American, and truly, this place is better than I could have imagined after spending much time dreaming of a true German restaurant and bar.
I did not eat from the menu, but from what I read and saw, the fare is truly local and German insofar as local people came in quite regularly, knowing that what awaited them was delightful, satisfying, and delicious.
How do I know this? The bar keep spoke some English, and I fell flat on my face trying to use my German in her to order and ask about the restrooms. I also tried to apologize in English and she just said 'okay?!'
She was busy, and this, to me, is a great sign. The phone rang constantly and the book for reservations was quite thick. They seemed to be taking reservations for a few weeks out, which one would not expect for a place that seems so small. And yet, this seems to be one of the few truly authentic German places around ( DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THIS; my time here was brief and there is much in the town to explore ) Local german men came in and began discussing life and politics (I assume; I can speak some, but my abilities are not even close to a native level). In any case, this seemed to be a local place well versed by the residents of the town with much delight.
That being said, as a foreigner, I would caution one not familiar with the German language from going in; not because the experience is bad or they won't serve you, but rather because this is a local place for local people and to disrupt it for touristic reasons would be a crime against humanity. The staff would gladly have you here, just don't ruin it for everyone else is all I'm saying.
The interior is what I had dreamed a German bar would look: medium to dark woods and muted colors with glasses hanging down. And the beer, mein Gott, the beer. Do yourself a favor and drink anything dark; Germany is a place of great beer and here there is not a single exception. I could not stop myself, yet was not wasted in any sense.
Above all, this is a beautiful place that is serving up serious quality, so much so that local people refuse to stop returning. If you are a tourist, don't give them a reason to. But if you have a chance, stop in, have a beer (or three) and enjoy the splendor of...
Read moreAlte Zunft Kehl is a cozy, inviting restaurant that serves traditional German and Alsatian cuisine with great attention to flavour and presentation. The atmosphere is warm, and the staff are welcoming, making it a delightful dining experience.
I started with their Flädlesuppe (pancake strip soup), a light yet flavourful dish that set the tone for the meal. The Flammenkuchen (Alsatian flatbread) was perfectly crisp and generously topped, showcasing the authentic regional taste. For the main course, I tried the Rahmschnitzel (pork escalope with creamy sauce), which was tender, rich, and perfectly balanced. To finish, the Apfelstrudel (apple strudel) was a highlight—flaky pastry with just the right amount of sweetness, served with a creamy side.
If you’re looking for hearty, authentic flavours in a relaxed and cozy setting, Alte Zunft Kehl is a must-visit....
Read moreWe visited here while on holiday from the UK and it was fantastic. The barman was super helpful and friendly. He made us feel welcome and talked us through the beers on tap and different menu options. Once we ordered he was very attentive and the food arrived quickly and was delicious! The only downside was that we only found this place on our last night in Kehl, otherwise we would have eaten here every night for the full week! We will definitely be back when we make...
