We had a good time. After a long day that started at midnight, and that was spent driving in crazy traffic and without stopping for a proper meal, we were afraid to order something we wouldn't like.
As soon as we stepped in, a waitress called Laura came along and welcomed us. She was polite and confident; we could tell that she wanted to do her job and knew how to do it. She led us to a table of our choice. She asked what we would have. Polite: no fake smile, but not a frown either; just a demeanor that's both pleasant and business-like.
We asked for some shots. Laura got them promptly. We ordered our meals after a while. Laura and the other people seemed to always have their eyes on clients. A little gesture and they would just appear at a table like genies. Prompt service.
The food was delicious. I had fried rice with chicken. My friend asked for banku with tilapia. The food arrived wrapped in cling film. Looks like somebody cared about our food not getting contaminated en route to our table. Nice touch. The arrangement of food on our plates was excellent. The tilapia was large. Overall, the food was delicious. Yes, it was. When I jokingly asked for extra hot sauce to take home to my wife, Laura chuckled and actually went over and got it!!! Incredible.
The washroom was surprisingly neat. I felt that there weren't enough amenities for a place as large and as popular as this joint. And the fittings were of the cheap sort that didn't fit a place that is marketed as chic. But it was neat on a Wednesday evening. On Friday evenings and through the weekend, traffic at this joint is large; I don't know if the toilet will still be found neat then.
What we paid didn't break the bank. That's not to say that this place is cheap. You could probably get more food and drinks for your money at a less trendier place. But Becky Kay is placed to cater to a more upscale clientele.
The place has limited parking, though. When business picks up on the weekends, parking spills over into the streets; people park on the lawned medians and all. I think this is a public nuisance. But is typical of many Ghanaian hospitality businesses to only plan for humans. Somehow, these supposedly trendy places conveniently forget that the type of people they wish to attract come with their own vehicles. This is irresponsible planning. So,...
Read moreWe visited Elmina Castle and then stopped at Beckykay's Restaurant, but unfortunately, the experience was deeply disappointing. If a 0-star rating were possible, that's what I would give. The customer service was poor, and the spring rolls were as hard as rocks. Worse, you're restricted to ordering only one type of meat with no option to add more, making it feel like you're forced to eat what they choose. The entire experience felt unnecessarily restrictive.
The supervisor, Rubby, had her feet on the table, which was especially disturbing, knowing that food is served on the same surface. My meal wasn't ready even after an hour and a half, so I decided to cancel it. Despite this, they still packed the food as takeaway, even though I had clearly canceled the order.
The chef took far too long—over an hour and a half to prepare a simple dish like Eba and okra. Ophilia, who served me, was polite and respectful, but she couldn't have done much when the food wasn't even ready.
The kitchen staff and the supervisor definitely need to be replaced. Whoever owns this restaurant should take immediate action to save the business, or it will collapse. I will definitely not...
Read moreThe food is good and inexpensive, but the music on weekend evenings is so loud that you won’t even be able to hear your server ask questions and they won’t be able to hear your answers—good luck holding a conversation with your dinner companions! If you ask for the music to be turned down just a small amount, they’ll instead suggest that you go sit at an inside table, which will cost you an extra 5 cedis per dish. The wait staff couldn’t care less about whether you’re enjoying your experience at the restaurant, and it will take a minimum of an hour for your food to come out of the kitchen. If you’re in any kind of hurry, you want to be able to hold conversations with your friends, or you value your eardrums, go to Oasis or another restaurant instead. Beckykay just isn’t up to the task of basic service. It’s perfect, however, if you want a club-like atmosphere at 7:00pm, minus the...
