My recent trip to Greece was a trip of a lifetime. My wife's family and friends are from Kavala, a beautiful little city with beautiful people and beautiful food most especially their seafood. My wife's friends, now my friends as well, took us to many different places and ate many different meals, a few of these amazing places stood out about the rest and Savvas was one of them. Let me start by saying that it is set right against the crystal clear water in a beautiful little bay, the view is wonderful and a gentle breeze cools you as you sip on your iced tsipouro and dip your crusty bread into some spectacular baked stew with tomato and shrimp, as well as a variety of mezza filling every inch of the table, not to mention the grilled octopus, fried squid feathery light thinly shaved zucchini that I could eat all day, fried fishes grilled fishes with olive oil and a squeeze of lemon just mind blowing! We were also treated like kings everyone was so helpful and nice the owner came by and talked to us and introduced us to his mother who apparently started the restaurant, everyone was lovely. It's restaurants like these that make a trip. Its people that look past the language barrier and the strain of dealing with tourists all day to make you feel special in their restaurant and their country so you go home with your perfect memories and your desire to return and re-live and re-taste everything. I'm writing this as not only a review but a thank you note to Savvas and the people of Kavala and Greece, so thank you for the amazing food and your kindness oh and also thank you for my new...
Read moreWe had to wait about 30 minutes for a table, which honestly wasn’t too bad. Prices seemed pretty normal for the area—our bill for four people came to €80. They even had a Bulgarian menu, which was a nice touch. The service was great: fast, friendly, and every waiter spoke English, which made things easy.
The food, though, was a bit of a mixed bag. We started with zucchini in sauce, fried feta, and fried squid. All three were tasty and left a good first impression. But then came the letdowns. The saganaki shrimp were slightly overcooked, and the sauce felt more like plain tomato sauce than anything special. At €15, it didn’t feel worth it. The stuffed squid was even worse—it cost €18, but it was burned, extremely dry, and filled only with peppers and tzatziki. Definitely not what I was expecting, especially since it seemed to be one of their highlighted dishes.
One funny detail: at first, they brought us two bottles of water and three loaves of bread “on the house,” and after the meal, they gave us an ice cream each as a gift. It felt nice… until we got the bill and saw that the bread was €1 each, the water €1.50 each, and the ice creams €1 each. Not a huge deal, but a little disappointing.
The best part of the whole evening was the atmosphere. The place was lively, right by the sea, with great music that made it feel vibrant and fun. But overall, aside from the setting, the restaurant felt like just another...
Read moreThe food was ok, but not more than that. We were offered bread that we did not order and we had to pay 3 euros for it at the end. I understand there is a service fee, but it should be stated as it is, not as bread. We were 3 people and each plate arrived separately. I couldn't start eating before my child, so I waited until everybody received their plate, so I ate my food cold in the end. The worst thing about the experience is that they allow vendors to come by the table and push you into buying their stuff. Particularily, there was this guy selling notebooks, that after I politely told him "No, thank you!", he looked at the menu and saw the romanian flag, then started scolding us in a boken romanian language. He was very rude and persistent, and demanded that we helped him feed his children, as he was there working, instead of stealing. He was really pushy and had quite an angry demeanor, I didn't feel safe at that point. I had to raise my voice to get him to leave us alone, which ruined my mood for the rest of the meal. The orange pie they gave us at yhe end was the only good thing, but unfortunately we had to eat it in a hurry, as the mosquitos had become unbearable at that point. Pretty...
