Kalamakia Tavern — Restaurant in Municipality of East Mani

It’s the third time in about 10 years that I’m writing a review for this establishment and the reason is that it has remained (in my opinion) the best place to eat in Mani. I understand that the management has passed from one member of the family to another but as far as I am concerned the quality is still too notch so I think it merits a new review: The location cannot be beaten; Skoutari beach is one if the best beaches in Mani (it had a Blue-Flag, I didn’t notice it this year), with golden sand and very gradual deepening of the water so it’s both children and older-people friendly and it usually has calm waters. The restaurant is located on the beach and it has very nice sunbeds and umbrellas in front of it that one may rent for 10€ and have a coffee or some other drink while sunbathing. We had our coffee and a swim and then went up the stairs to the restaurant proper for a late lunch/ early dinner (by greek standards, at around five o’clock). There is a shower stall to rinse off the salt and the toilets are clean and big enough for one to change from swimsuit to regular clothes. The staff is very clean and attentive, the service was fast and efficient and we never had to ask twice for anything. We ordered greens and fish food and were rewarded with very freshly made salads. All the “standard” summer fare, fried calamari, potatoes, octopus, fried zucchini and eggplant were excellently made (it’s the “little things” that make the quality), but I want to particularly mention the “fish-carbonara” plate that was very nicely textured and extremely tasty and the black-bean salad with salted fish on top that was something I haven’t had anywhere else. You can’t beat the view and the overall impression is one of good quality and kindness. The prices are also good, we were stuffed to the gills and we paid 155€ for 5 people (about 30€ per person) which I find very reasonable given the quality and location. 2023 Update: Waterfront restaurant with great food and solid service. It does get busy around 1:30 PM. As far as dishes go, the “Atherina” are really good small fried fish, almost like French fries. The grilled calamari with pesto and fava spread is a real top contender. The cheeseballs are great with the tomato jam and we liked that the zucchini balls have feta cheese in them. Their Χόρτα are really good as well, especially when paired with their char-grilled Haloumi.

They still get three stars for service because they ruined a beach day for my entire family in 2022. It will take more than a good meal to recover from that.

2022: They had a 5-Star review from me until they forgot about my reservation for three sets of front row loungers on a Saturday and restaurant reservations and I had to tell all my friends and family to go somewhere else last minute. I called two times and called two days in advance to make the reservation. Old review below.

Really nice beach with fine sand and clear water. The water front is shallow and the Kalamaki Taverna that services the loungers seems to have good food as well.

You will need to reserve a lounger/umbrella space if you want a good one. Generally the day before is more than enough. Anything with a Gamma [Γ] is a front row seat.

Two loungers and a beanbag [poof as the call it] will run you 8 bucks. Loungers are very comfortable and I like the fact that they accept...

Η κριτική δεν αφορά την ταβέρνα καθαυτή καθώς το φαγητό της παραμένει πολύ καλό όπως πάντα, αλλά το μπιτς μπαρ. Δυστυχώς απ' όταν έκανε ανακαίνιση στις ξαπλώστρες, αφενός είναι οι μισές σε σχέση με παλιά και επί χρέωση (10€ το σετ), αφετέρου η εξυπηρέτηση είναι ΤΡΑΓΙΚΗ.

Πήγαμε χθες για μπάνιο, και περιμέναμε πάνω από τις ομπρέλες μήπως και αδειάσει καμία. Με το που άδειασε και πήγαμε να καθίσουμε, έρχεται ο υπάλληλος μ έναν άλλο πελάτη και μου είπε ότι έχει αναμονή και προηγείται ο κύριος, αλλά μας λέει η επόμενη ομπρέλα που θα αδειάσει είναι δική σας. Απολύτως δεκτό και περιμένουμε.

Μου λέει ένα ζευγάρι ότι θα φύγει τώρα, οπότε περιμένω να καθίσω στην ομπρέλα τους. Πετάγεται ο διπλανός κύριος και μου λέει "είχαμε κάνει 3 κρατήσεις αλλά δε μας τις έκαναν ποτέ, μισό λεπτό να μιλήσω". Κι αφού ισχυρίστηκε ότι είχε 3 κρατήσεις για 6 άτομα που δεν είχαν έρθει καν λες και βρίσκεται στην Πλαζ Βουλιαγμένης, έδωσαν σ εκείνον την ομπρέλα και μου ξαναλέει ο υπάλληλος "έχει αναμονή". Το αποτέλεσμα επί μισή ώρα ο κύριος με τις 3 κρατήσεις να έχει πιάσει 3 ομπρέλες εκ των οποίων χρησιμοποιούσε μόνο τη μία, κι εμείς καθόμασταν και βλέπαμε τις πετσέτες του να αράζουν μόνες τους περιμένοντας να αδειάσει η επόμενη ομπρέλα.

Προφανώς στο ενδιάμεσο στρώνουμε κάτω, κάνουμε μια βουτιά κι επιστρέφουμε μήπως έχει αδειάσει κάτι. Ώσπου βλέπω τον υπάλληλο να συνοδεύει ένα ζευγάρι από την ταβέρνα και να το βάζει στην επόμενη ομπρέλα που άδειασε. Ρε φίλε του λέω με δουλεύεις; και μου απαντάει "έγινε παρεξήγηση με κάποια άτομα κι έχει αναμονή".

Για να μη σχολιάσω φυσικά ότι όσοι ήθελαν να φάνε, άφηναν τις πετσέτες τους στην ομπρέλα και αραζαν πάνω κάνα δίωρο. Σε κανένα σοβαρό μαγαζί με πολλή κίνηση δεν επιτρέπεται αυτό.

Εν ολίγοις, δε με ενοχλεί το rebrand του μαγαζιού ούτε η χρέωση στο σετ ούτε η ανατίμηση στην ταβέρνα. Καλά κάνεις φίλε μου και θες το μαγαζί σου να ανέβει επίπεδο. Αν πας όμως στα μπιτς μπαρ που προσπαθείς να αντιγράψεις, μαζί με το 10€ σετ ομπρέλας υπάρχουν 2-3 άτομα μονίμως κάτω, με ακουστικό που συνεννοούνται και σε τακτοποιούν στην ομπρέλα με το που αδειάσει, όσο εσύ περιμένεις στην υποδοχή. Υπάρχει κανονισμός και η κράτηση έχει ελάχιστη κατανάλωση, δεν μπορεί ο κάθε Αθηναίος που βγαίνει απ το καβούκι του 10 μέρες τον χρόνο να σου κάνει κουμάντο στο μαγαζί με 6 καφέδες επειδή έχει μάθει να κάνει κράτηση ακόμη και στην τουαλέτα πριν κατουρήσει. Υπάρχει εκπαιδευμένο προσωπικό, νέα παιδιά με διάθεση να βγάλουν τιπς κι όχι ο εργάτης που τον χειμώνα σου μαζεύει πορτοκάλια στο Έλος. Παλιά είχες τις μπλε ξαπλώστρες σου απλωμενες σ όλη την παραλία με ένα κοριτσάκι να παίρνει παραγγελίες κι ήσουν άρχοντας. Τώρα είσαι ο φτωχός συγγενής της Χαλκιδικής.

Για να μη θυμηθώ πέρυσι που κάτι γυφτουλες σε είχαν βάλει να φέρεις το τραπέζι της ταβέρνας μπροστά στις ξαπλώστρες κι είχαν γαρίδες και κρασιά δίπλα στα μωρά που έπαιζαν με τα κουβαδακια. Λίγη ντροπή πια, Λακωνία είμαστε, όχι Φαληράκι της Ρόδου. Και με τη χειρότερη πρόσβαση σε πάρκινγκ σε σχέση με τις υπόλοιπες παραλίες της Λακωνίας, δηλαδή τρώμε ήδη ταλαιπωρία για να σας έρθουμε από τη Σπάρτη και μετά μας βγαίνει και ξινό από πάνω.

Θλιβομαι γι' αυτή την κριτική γιατί έρχομαι στο μαγαζί σας από όταν τελειώσαμε το σχολείο και κοντεύουμε τα 30 πλέον αλλά χθες έφτασα στα όριά μου....
