The place looks really nice, especially with the open counter where you can watch the chef preparing dishes—it’s a great touch. However, I wouldn’t recommend sitting too far inside, as it gets quite stuffy (we visited in the summer, so it was generally hot). Our order was taken by a very friendly waitress.
I ordered the chicken gyros in pita (extra points for letting you choose your sauce), and my fiancée had the chicken souvlaki. We also ordered a spicy cheese dip and fries to share. The souvlaki arrived quite quickly together with the dip and fries. The souvlaki was delicious—perfectly cooked, with all the fat rendered out, so the meat was very tender. The fries were also very good and obviously freshly made. The dip was excellent (made with feta, slightly spicy), but in my opinion, it was a bit overpriced at 4€ for a small dish.
Then my gyros finally arrived, and unfortunately, this was a complete letdown. The pita, sauce, vegetables, and fries all looked great, but after the first bite, I realized there was skin in the meat (slippery, soft, chewy... really unpleasant) and lots of fatty pieces. I started picking them out and, by the time I got halfway through, found only one or two small pieces of actual meat (I even took a photo of what I picked out because it was so surprising, but out of respect I won’t post it here). The rest—and there was a lot of it—was skin or fat.
I mentioned this to the waitress and after a short conversation she took the dish back to the kitchen. A few minutes later, she returned and told me they would make my dish again from scratch. After around 10 minutes I got my meal back, and this time the meat was normal (there was still some fat, but what I consider a normal amount; although to my surprise, I still found a single piece of skin. How does that end up in a gyros?). In the end, the gyros was very good—the meat was fresh, well cooked, and went perfectly with the rest of the clearly fresh, delicious ingredients.
Still, I ended up finishing my meal only after my fiancée had already finished hers, so the whole lunch took a bit longer than planned. Also, every time we needed something, it usually took a while to get the attention of the staff, even though the place wasn’t busy inside (though it was Sunday afternoon, so perhaps there were more guests in the garden area—I can’t be sure, so I don’t want to complain too much).
Although the restaurant resolved the situation without much fuss, I don’t feel I can leave a fully positive review—especially since, from what I’ve seen, there are several other reviews mentioning exactly the same problem, which shows that unfortunately this isn’t a...
Read moreWe stopped by Souvlaki Point on our way out of Heraklion after arriving by ferry. We needed a bite before a 2 hr drive to Chania and the food hit the spot. It was nice to sit outside on their patio in the early evening.
My girlfriend had the chicken souvlaki - the chicken was well seasoned and moist. I had the chicken gyro. This was not the typical chicken carved off the rotating spit but a full chicken leg, deboned, and then grilled. It was very flavorful! It was suggested that I have it with the sweet mustard sauce, not tzatziki - it was excellent! The gyros were big with a good helping of tomato, lettuce and fries. We were so full afterwards.
Two gyros, a Coca-Cola Zero and a 2 1L waters was €11. What a deal for excellent food - we may stop there when we leave...
Read moreWe visited the Souvlaki Point after a long journey, and we were hungry for anything that came across eatable. Thankfully, the souvlaki Point exceeded our expectations where there none. The food was hearty and delicious. Furthermore, our waiter Pavlos was a prime example of excellent service, which you would expect at a high-class restaurant.
I hope more hungry travellers visit your oasis of excellent food and service and are willing to give testament to it.
