Taverna Ilias — Restaurant in Municipality of Kalymnos

The location is really nice and the staff was helpful with boat parking, hence at least some stars for service. However, when it comes to the restaurant and food, comparing with the reviews here, it was disappointing. Not sure if they just had a bad day, however if you fancy fresh food, this is not the place. When you look into the kitchen, you see two microwaves being used for most of the meals (microwaved goat?). The seasoning was also off for most of the meals - we had almost unseasoned goat meat, and also kidneys-crying-over-salted seafood risotto. The staff seems to be trying and the place has a lot of potential due to location and Greek food being awesome in general, but to match it, the quality and freshness of food needs to be improved a lot. Food was very bad. Our expectations were not too high but food quality and taste was lower than our expectations. Grilled Kalamari was hard and smelly, octopus was salty and impossible to chew, fried kalamari was way too expensive for a small plate. Shrimps were too bad. But lamb chops and veil were good. Do not eat seafood in here and this is very sarcastic because we came here to eat seafood which is totally reasonable because we are making a marin holiday like everyone. We were recommended the Taverna Ilias by two Greek friends who live on Kalymnos as a ‘must go to place’. And they were not wrong!. The owners are warm and welcoming, the prices are incredible given the quality of the food and the view over the bay is ‘to die for’. But if you go there, you must try the goat in tomatoes. I have eaten goat all over Greece and this was the best I’ve tasted, marinated and slow cooked for 12hours, it has to be tried. But as there are three tavernas in Palionissos, make sure that when the road comes to an end, you drop down to the left onto the gravel track, keep left and go up the slight rise to the small car park behind the blue taverna Ilias.
