We have been to crete in 08.09.2024. I know it has been a while, but my partner and I cannot forget this family owned taverna. We have had a little trip throughout Greece, which are doing every year, to visit family. And our final stop is always crete, since we have fallen in love with Elafonisi.
We randomly searched for a great place to dine and stumbled upon this little place called "The West".
As you can see from the pictures below, we have ordered quiet a lot of food, just to try everything out and it was a blessing in disguise. Especially the sausage "Lukaniko" was our highlight.
We have to say, the food the Ambiente, the service everything was perfect.
While we were eating, the owner and his family also sat down next to us and ate. They offered us to share some salads and sweet bakery, which we could not decline, even though we were stuffed to the brim and quiet tipsy.

We took a day trip from Chania to Elafonissi Beach - In itself a must! On the way back, we decided to drive along the coast instead of going back through the mountains, and chanced upon this little gem.
A beautiful, family-run local restaurant in a village of 75 people. The father is the local preacher, the mum is the chef, and the son George is running the restaurant with an open kitchen. Rounded off with a little wood-burning oven.
Expect amazing hospitality, and generosity.
We had an exceptional dinner with fresh local Lamb Chops, Greek Salad, Olives, Freshly Baked Bread, and Hot Raki with Honey. Delicious, fresh and natural, and all for an incredible EUR 26.
While we were there, literally half the village came to this little tavern for dinner. We cannot wait to come back in Spring.
Definitely worth a making a detour, if just for the experience, and definitely...

The host here is a very charismatic man who used to be a musician playing the local Cretan lute (they have live performances sometimes!). There was also a very friendly lady from Romania working there with great English. All the dishes we ordered were great, but the standout dish was the xoxli (local Cretan snails) in an amazing sauce of local herbs. Of course there was complimentary raki and candied bergamot for dessert which paired really well with the drink. They also sell homemade wines and raki, among other things. Highly recommended...
