Great seaside fish restaurant I was told that Nicolas, the owner fishes some of the fish himself and buys others. The fish which is recommended here is "Balas" Μπαλάς or Large-eye dentex (Dentex macrophthalmus for the latin oriented). Unfortunately we missed the chance to taste it this time. After that, we looked in vain for this fish everywhere in Crete. We will come back for it to Captain Nicolas. I asked for the fish soup that I love. It seems it is not ready to serve. You have to first go and choose the fish you want and then they will prepare the soup with it. They say it can take up to an hour to prepare. We didn't have the time, so I passed. Aside from the best fish, they also serve Greek vegetable dishes, which we ordered. We had two of them:

  1. Gemista ("stuffed"): Stuffed and baked tomatoes, peppers and zucchini with rice, and served with yogurt.
  2. Boureki: Greek casserole with baked zucchini, potato and cheese Normally Boureki is börek, which is a family of pastries or pies that probably originated in the Turkish cuisine and is also found in the Balkans. But strangely enough, they also call this casserole, boureki. Both vegetable dishes were very delicious and cheap. Very recommended...

Delicious fish, and funny story.

I dined at Captain Nicolas on my first night in Crete. Fresh, delicious fish and Cretan salad. Beautiful place right on the beach. Loved it.

Fast forward two weeks.

I’m stranded on a cliff in Falasarna at like 9 PM on a Sunday night after my car battery died. I tried stopping 2 or 3 cars and they were nice but none of them had a solution.

Third car I stop is a pickup truck with an older local couple inside. Although they didn’t know me at all and didn’t speak much English, they went out of their way to rescue me. They drove me around the area speaking to other drivers til they found the HOME address of the local car mechanic in Platanos. They drove me over there so he could come fix my car, and they even offered to put me up in their hotel for the night (didn’t need to use the hotel but still nice).

As sheer coincidence would have it, turns out the husband was “Captain Nicolas” himself, and he and his wife were the owners of this great restaurant where I had dined two weeks before.

They were so sweet and kind… and happen to run a fabulous restaurant.

5 stars for captain...

If you're planning a visit to the stunning Falasarna Beach, make sure to take your time and soak in all its natural beauty — and when hunger calls, head to Captain Nicolas Restaurant. This seaside gem is the perfect spot for a relaxed dinner with a front-row view of the sunset and the soothing sound of waves.

What to try: If you're a seafood lover, ask for the catch of the day — you'll be served freshly caught fish, grilled to perfection. The Cretan salad is a must: fresh, vibrant, and full of local flavor. And let’s be honest — no dinner here is complete without kalamari. Tender, crispy, and unforgettable.

To round off your meal, you'll be treated to complimentary fresh fruit and a shot of raki, the traditional Cretan spirit, to help you unwind even more.

Whether you're sun-kissed and salty from a day at the beach or just chasing the perfect sunset dinner, Captain Nicolas offers the ideal blend of taste, atmosphere, and...

Terrific seafood restaurant. We have had lunch there 3 times across a week, tried many dishes and all of them were excellent. Locals will tell you it's one of the best places for fresh fish and seafood in the whole Crete and indeed it's hard to imagine the food could be better elsewhere on the island. Location is wonderful too, on a tiny and cosy beach, take one of the tables set on the sand (in the shadow) and enjoy being at the same on the beach and eating deliciously fresh food. Preparations are simple but generous - lots of olive oil, parsley, onion - just the way they should be, with the characteristic taste of barbecued fish and seafood. Extremely nice and welcoming staff. Even when it's busy the service (sometimes just one person!) is fast and efficient. I wish we could be there at least once a week all year round! The octopus and grilled squid are to die for!
