An Unforgettable Dining Experience at Tavern Filoxenia!

During our family trip from Australia, we had the pleasure of dining at Tavern Filoxenia in Crete — and it was truly a highlight of our visit. My cousin, who lives locally, highly recommended it, and it exceeded all our expectations.

The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with a real sense of traditional Cretan hospitality. The cuisine was absolutely beautiful — authentic dishes made with fresh, high-quality produce that you could really taste in every bite. From the starters to the mains, everything was bursting with flavor and prepared with love.

What made the experience even more special was the service. The waiters were incredibly friendly and helpful, taking the time to explain each dish and offer recommendations, which made us feel right at home.

If you’re in Crete and looking for a genuine taste of the island, don’t miss Tavern Filoxenia. We’ll...

Tourist buses arrive (I know what you're thinking but despite it having this audience, the food is spectacular which explains the many locals who eat there) between 3 and 4 pm - so come before or after to enjoy a serene seating under gorgeous trees and next to the spring. Simply amazing slow cooked goat (the chef is regionally famous for it) and divine moussaka (probably due to how the mother prepares the eggplants before because I do not like moussaka but this one was amazing). We also recommend the boiled greens (horta) IF you like bitter greens from the mountain. The homemade lemon cake dessert was spectacular, especially for two people who do not like dessert usually. The homemade traditional red wine without any preservatives (by the father) was also very nice and different as was the homemade rakomelo (they sell both). Very friendly staff (the son) that spoke excellent English. A simply...

My family (and extended family) have been customers of this restaurant since its opening day. Food and all is of very high quality but my latest visit on August 14th, to celebrate my wedding anniversary was my worst and last in this establishment. One of the many stray cats was circling our table in the outside sitting area and I started playing with her and also giving her some food (minding not to litter the terrace). All of a sudden, one of the waiters, jumped very quickly from one side of the table to where I was sitting and stepped on the cat.... He immediately said that it was an accident and when he realized my discomfort he went on saying that he has much more animals than all of us sitting on the table combined and that "the animals should know their place". I told him to his face that for me personally, was the very last time in the restaurant.

It really messed...

It's always a good sign when locals are eating at a restaurant. We went to Filoxenia twice and heard locals on nearby tables. The food is delicious with lots of options to choose from, generous portions and fair prices. Everything tasted fresh. The mixed grill for one was amazing, made on the barbecue grill. The Cretan Salad is very tasty, the baklavas were big and juicy, the Kalitsounias were incredible and the Gemistas was very nice too. Everything else we ordered did not disappoint. The service is excellent: fast, efficient, friendly. We were offered complimentary fruits and raki for dessert. It is located in the small town of Elos, just a 3 minutes detour from the main road that leads to Elafonissi or other beaches in the southwest. The restaurant's ambiance is also super nice. Highly recommended!

Simply the best restaurant we've visited in Greece. Best quality products wonderfully served, in a way my kids who are not crazy about veggies, always asked for Cretan Salad! We've visited Filoxenia over 10 times during our stay nearby, always to utmost delight. But it's not only food, but also the spirit of true Greek hospitality (=Filoxenia). My teenage son who hates me and everything I choose, including Greece ofc, decided to oficially forgive me because of the amazing and lovely Skalidakis Family, Panagiotis especially! Thanks and enjoy life!
