I do this very rarely but I have to give my honest opinion, which isn't good. We went there during the worst time possible, we came by car and saw a lot of busses from the beaches. The place was packed, every table taken. The staff ran through the restaurant as if the devil was chasing them. But if you observed individually: most of the stress seemed to be coming from lacking organization. Many didn't know what to do and if they are allowed to do it, they were arguing a lot and shouting at each other. We didn't mind really, it was busy - stuff happens. What wasn't ok is that most of the staff were not waering masks and came way to close to us and other customers. We ordered beers to our food. They didn't come, but we got free water so we were alright, we just wanted to cancel the beer order and get the check (we were done with our meal by then). When we told the stressed lady that we'd like to pay and leave she told us that we do have time for the beers and ran away. We tried to stop her and explain but she didn't listen. We then observed how she pulled two allready drought beer mugs out of the fridge (which was closed the whole time we spend there - so at least 45 min old), put a little foam on top and put them on our table. We immediately told her we didnt want them anymore but she just left. It took 5 min and a few kind but firm words from us for her to acknowledge that we wont touch the beer until she gave in and gave us the corrected bill. That kind of behaviour is just not okay, even if there are plenty people in the restaurant and where I come from, when you serve an old beer with new foam, you should just give your alcohol license back. Pretty sure the beer went back into the fridge by the way. The food was mediocre at best. There are plenty great taverns on crete, maybe not...
Read moreKastanofolia Restaurant proved to be the perfect ending to our trip from Elafonisi Beach. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm hospitality by the staff, creating a welcoming atmosphere that set the stage for an exceptional dining experience.
What made this place truly special was the soothing sound of water running beside the restaurant, creating a tranquil ambiance that complemented the picturesque surroundings. It felt like a hidden gem tucked away from the hustle and bustle.
Now, let's talk about the food. I couldn't agree more – the dishes were simply lovely. My personal favorite was the lamb Kleftiko, a true culinary delight. The meat was so tender that it practically melted off the bone, leaving a memorable taste that lingers in my memory.
But the surprises didn't end with the meal. After we finished dining, they generously offered us some chestnut liquor and fresh fruit, completely free of charge. The chestnut liquor was a revelation, one of the sweetest and most delightful liqueurs I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. It was hard to resist having just one more sip.
As an extra tip, don't forget to explore the charming 14th-century church located at the back of the restaurant. You can follow the water that runs alongside, and it will lead you there. It's a charming piece of history that adds to the overall charm of this place.
All in all, I'm thrilled that we decided to stop at Kastanofolia on our way back from Elafonisi Beach. It truly was the perfect way to conclude a wonderful day of adventure...
Read moreTrap. Overrated. Ended up here due to not proplerly reviewing which we regret… Small overpriced greek salad...not even one piece of bread. The main dishes came uncordinated but quick. Boureki with lack of spice. Chicken fillet was just okay but overpriced as the fries that came along where sucked with oil and not enjoyable.
No bread, no little raki or something sweet but charging Eur 39 for 3 basic dishes, a little beer and water. I honestly felt sorry for the money spent there. Recommended was Octopus (that was not even on the card - no price) or the „best“ expensive fish. Most expensive dishes…
Too many cats over there… The high rate I don’t understand. Probably the large coordinated buses dropping ppl there during lunch eating first time greek dishes. No reason to stop there... One Euro was charged for the cutlery (sorry but should we have eaten with our hands?). The guy pointed at the table. It was for everything on the table. I’ve seen small charges in other restaurants but usually for a basket of bread or a few olives that were served. I never had to pay for the basic cutlery. Seems very stingy and I would have preferred not to pay that Euro. Nothing here reflects the Cretain culture nor...
