We were recommended to come and eat here from the Air B&B we stayed at, "Sunset Elafonisi". According to them this is the best place to dine in the area, however that couldn't be farther from the truth. The food was bland and oversalted which indicated that it was old (that is a trick usually done to mask the old taste.) Some of my food wasn't even cooked at all! I ordered fries and some came completely raw and white- not even cooked! The mousaka was also the worst I've ever tasted in my life. Everything is also overpriced- at least double what you would pay for at a normal restaurant. On top of all this, the so called "chef" is extremely rude. I say this because my 5 year old son- not interested in the bad tasting food, threw a few tiny pieces of fat from his meal to a stray cat that was walking around in the restaurant. The so called "chef" saw it, banged his hand on the table and came over to us and had the audacity to scold us like we were little school children. He said, "who threw that?!" I said my son, and he says does he understand Greek, yes I said, and he sternly started saying, "you don't feed the cat with your food and if you don't eat everything on the plate you're going to wash all of the dishes!" First of all if you don't want people feeding the cat you should put up a sign that says don't feed the cat or tell people from the start that you don't want anyone feeding the stray cat. Second, imagine the gaul and how controlling this man is that he lectures his own customers- the people that keep his restaurant open in the first place!!- on what they can and cannot do with their own food that they purchased! He's going to tell his customer how they eat their own food, how much to eat, how to eat it etc.. What do you care what I do with my food? I PAID for it. Maybe I'm crazy and I just like to buy meals and then throw it straight into the garbage can. What do you care? You're going to tell me- the customer who paid you, what I can and cannot do with the food you sold me? After he said that my son wanted to leave right away and my daughter who's 4 years old started saying I don't want to eat anymore and he's going to make me! What a bad experience. I imagine most of the positive reviews are probably fake. Avoid this place and the recommendation from sunset elafonisi as they are friends and they...
Read moreI should start to say that I rarely give 1* reviews. Usually the service/food needs to be very poor to deserve such a rating. Me and my partner are foodies, live to cook and travel to explore new cuisines. That's one of they main reasons we traveled to Crete. We went to this isolated family owned taverna due to all the amazing reviews we found online. Typical homemade and humble cretan food was what I was looking for. Starting with the positives: The plates, cups and trays are made of ceramic and are beautiful. They remind me of when I used to go to my mother's hometown when I was a kid. The ambience is also quite nice. Some low tone relaxing music and a pretty garden where the tables are, surrounded by trees. In terms of food there's no menu. The hostess will tell you what they are making on the day, meaning you will not know the prices of what you are ordering (you can always ask of course). In our case we were told about several starters and only one main, which was odd: We had traditional Fava, roasted peppers, Zucchini balls and as a main the fried fish. The first lacked salt and came in a pool of olive oil, the peppers had a huge ammount of course salt, the Zucchini balls were literally black outside, soaked in frying oil, but cold inside. Finally the fish which barely had any salt, and simply didn't taste good. Given that it was deep fried I could not evaluate how fresh it was. To make it more surprising I saw in a nearby table a group of german tourists having a meal composed of completely different dishes from what we were offered at the beginning. We also requested the house red wine, which was arrived in a hot jar. The jar was freakin hot! Not room temperature, not warm, hot as if it had just left the dishwasher. To make it worse, the wine wad literally the worst wine I ever had, apart from pure vinegar of course. Acidic, translucent, brown, alcoholic. During the entire meal, around our table we had 3 small cats surrounding us asking for food very intrusively and literally stepping on our feet. It was quite annoying and I saw a couple in another table suffering from the find issue. By the end of the meal a dessert of greek yogurt and honey was offered. Nothing to say about it really. All in all it was quite a bad experience. No dish we had was acceptable, which goes against all the good reviews. Bad day for...
Read moreWe had a really strange experience there. We arrived just after sunset as a group of six for dinner. When we asked for drinks and inquired about the types of juices available for the kids, the waiter (or possibly the owner) seemed irritated right from the start. He eventually brought our drinks and beers, but only provided a glass for one of the beers. When I asked if we could have glasses for the other beers as well, he seemed surprised but brought us some water glasses instead.
As I continued ordering and asked for some shrimp, things took a bizarre turn. My friends had ordered shrimp just a minute earlier, and when I asked for an extra portion for my daughter, the waiter suddenly started yelling. He complained that people were waiting and that he didn't want to spend so much time with us, insisting that we place one big order instead of multiple smaller ones. I honestly couldn’t understand why he was so upset. I told him that with such an attitude, we wouldn’t be staying for dinner and would rather leave. He continued yelling, telling us to go home and so on.
To top it off, one of the kids in our group ended up crying because she was hungry. If you’re the owner reading this, shame on you for providing such terrible service.
P.S. "There are plenty of much better places nearby, just 10-15 minutes away. Don’t risk ruining...
