I've been eating around Crete and honestly for a place that wants to be authentic Cretan with a twist, it's way too touristy for me.
Food was ok. That greek carbonara is a great idea and kudos for whoever came with it. You need balls to recreate such a popular dish and actually make it good. The beef was below average - it tasted like it was some of those frozen stews from the supermarket and the banoffee waaaay to sweet for my taste. The pies were a little cold inside but still tasty.
The thing that really bothered me was the atmosphere. The waiters were like robots. They were always looking at us or taking rounds around our tables to check if they could take a plate or remove something from the table. I felt like they were always behind my back, waiting for me to finish. And there were like 4 tables and 7 waiters in the whole restaurant. It's not like they had to empty a table fast to make room for someone else. They never looked at us when we talked with them and they seemed bored all the time. I get it that they're young and don't have the social skills that their boss has, but I think they were instructed to be perfect because the restaurant really wants to maintain a high grade on reviews more than anything . It's way too forced. You don't need to be perfect, just talk normal, we are not from Michelin.
Overall is a good restaurant but I wouldn't come from far away especially for it. The reviews are subjective and so is mine and you cannot satisfy every customer. Most of the restaurants from Crete has over 4,5 on Google and they don't struggle that much as you seem to...
Read moreOur friends recommended Taverna Neratzoula while we were visiting Chania, and it was a fantastic suggestion! It's a 30-minute drive from Elafonisi on your way back to Chania Old Town. Although it’s located on the road, it's not a busy one. Usually, you pass by roadside restaurants, unsure if they’re good, and if you don’t see many people, you might skip them. But in this case, you need to stop or make it a mission to visit.
We went there around 5:30 PM after our trip to Elafonisi, and though the place was empty when we arrived, the experience was exceptional from start to finish. The location, the friendly staff, and especially the food were all top-notch. Having lived in Crete for six years, I can say this place exceeded my expectations. Everything we ordered was delicious and served in generous portions. You absolutely cannot leave without trying the Cretan banoffee—it was so good that I’d drive two hours from Heraklion just to have it again....
Read moreSunday lunch, last week, at this cretan tavern in a small village around 30 km away from Chania town but in Chania region generally. It was our first time there, so we ordered a little bit more stuff to taste and have a general idea of their cuisine. So first of all, the price per person increased a little bit but this was the reason. We started with a salad with cherry tomatoes and cheese.. then follow with saganaki, green vegetables and three way cooked potatoes.. for our main meals we choose cretan meat pie and two different kind of pasta one with egg and panseta and the other with cretan green vegetables pesto. everything we ate, it was tasty , the stuff were very friendly and helpful.. definitely we will visit them again next summer because, sadly, the close in winter.. If you will be around Chania region definitely pay a visit...
