If you want the BEST and the FRESHEST fish in a clean and family owned traditional Fish Taverna, then this is the ONLY PLACE between Varkiza and Sounion that is worthy of a visit and lives up to its name. "Marida' is the name of a type of small fish that is fried and usually eaten in its entirety. You are sure to find these little fish and much, much more at Taverna Marida. Antonis Zagouris, carries on with pride, the tradition of his mother and father before him. They are well connected with local fishermen who regularly bring the day's catch. If Antony recommends something, you can be sure that it is the best and the freshest fish of that day. To start your meal, try a variety of small appetizers, of which my favourite is the eggplant dip/salad. It is made with roasted eggplant, onions, peppers, dill, parsley and walnuts. Absolutely mouth watering...do spread it on the fresh bread that comes with every meal. Next, you might want the traditional yogurt and garlic dip, tzadziki. This is especially nice as a dip and goes well with the fried zucchini balls. When in season, I love the mixed green platter which is an assortment of fresh boiled greens and beets. Delicious and so healthy. If you only want to have a light lunch, try some fried or grilled fresh Kalamari (Squid) or octopus and a dish of tiny friend "Marida." (little fish) If you are really hungry for something special, go inside with Antonis and choose one of many varieties of fresh fish for the grill or frying pan! Don't forget to try the house wines, made locally. White is my favourite, but the red is just as good. Or, if you are an experienced drinker, have some Ouzo. There is even icy cold beer by the glass from the tap. After you meal, you may try some local Greek strained yogurt topped with either honey, quince or preserved cherries or oranges. In the summer months, there is always a fresh variety of fruit. The service is great, the people are friendly and polite and the prices will not overwhelm you. Say hello to Antonis and tell him that 'Janet'...
Read moreVisit restaurant Sunday 30 July for lunch 5 people. Excellent food and we had many dishes including seafood. Beer was served in chilled glasses, service of staff and everyone concerned was fantastic and price was excellent $$. Venue is large with many excellent tables in garden type setting. We were Greek and Australian visiting from Athens. Returning to Athens I realised wallet was left on table with over $200 Euros and all my cards. Called restaurant and they immediately new, could not contact me as no mobile number in wallet. The owner told me that he would deliver wallet personally 3 days later at The Mart shopping which was 5 kilometres from me. I arrived on time and he was standing out front with wallet and contents intact. Talk about customer service- even if I did not misplace my stuff this restaurant on a very hot day provided the best food and hospitality during our stay. 6 star plus 10 star for his genuine concern about my loss- he drove 90 k to deliver. If you go down this area which has beautiful beaches across rd. You must visit.....
Read moreExcellent place, with fresh, delicious food and amazing service. Went there for lunch in March so it was not too busy. The restaurant is in a really lovely and quiet village. You can choose to sit inside or outside on the terrace, which overlooks the gardens, and you can also see part of the sea. For appetizers we had a delicious baked feta with pita bread and the grilled octopus, which was the best i’ve ever tasted. We chose the fried red mullet for the main, with some grilled bell peppers with balsamic vinegar and both were very good. When deciding on the fish, we were told we can choose it for ourselves so we were brought to the kitchen where we could pick out from the fresh capture. This made the experience even more unique. The staff was very welcoming and polite. I would go back anytime! If you find yourself in the Sounion area, definitely stop...
