Sofos — Restaurant in Municipality of Nemea

A breath away from the old village of legendary Nemea, where I spent my freshman summer along with US and British students excavating the area, I fell in love with a hospitable old tavern serving traditional Greek food from heaven and owned by a sweet old lady whose hands in the kitchen were divine. Decades later, filled with nostalgia I went down that same road to repeat the pleasure only to find that the old tavern had now given way to a modern Greek cuisine restaurant held by her grandson, George, and his wife Irene. A brilliant couple that took the place and lifted it up in the sky of comfort food and divine wine from the area of course. This kitchen is touched by the Ancient Greek Gods - there is no other word to describe it. The red wine of the region, Agiorgitiko (Saint = Agios, Giorgis = George —— of Saint George, Aghiorgitiko), is omnipresent in most of the recipes selection and the same goes for Dionysus himself. After touring the Temple of Zeus and the Ancient Stadium the locals recommended we search out Sofos. As a family of 5 (2 adult, 3 children) we chose a dish from each section of options. The beef fillet was tender and accompanied by seasonal veg and sauce. The Capelli with mushroom and truffle oil was outstanding. The short rib was hot and tender with a well paired sauce. The meatballs in sauce were soft and delicious (a perfect choice for a child but enjoyed by adults) Local beer and red wine paired well. Service was great and the chef was spot on with her recommendations and you can tell she loves her food...
