I would not recommend eating here unless you don't mind irritating service with extra dishes added to your order and your bill without it being made clear. We were wary this would be a tourist trap right by the cave but we were hungry and wanted a quick simple lunch. The "friendly" owner took our order which included telling me what to eat and mentioning a couple of things she would bring with the food. The food was brought to the table by a young boy so it was difficult to ask why the extra items appeared. The bill was not brought to the table so was paid unitemised inside at the till. €57 for 4 small gyros plates and 4 non-alcoholic drinks was a rip-off but probably added up due to the various unordered extras (unwanted cheese patries, greek salad and tsatsiki which should have been included with the gyros anyway). We had been in Crete for 12 days so we were not naive. Regarding the food (that we actually ordered), the gyros meat looked and tasted like it had been reheated. Based on our single experience, don't eat here unless you want to enjoy the amazing view from their outside tables and don't mind the issues raised above. Thankfully, this was the only bad dining experience we had in Crete (you can see my other reviews which are either 5* or 4*). I hope the owner reads this and changes the way she interacts with customers in the future as I thinks...
Read moreWe spent three days at Dictamus Homes and also ate at the tavern, and it was an incredible experience. The food was absolutely top notch. Everything was slow-cooked in a real traditional fire oven, and you could taste how the flavors blended perfectly together. Even the fries had this subtle hint of meat that made them so aromatic. The meats were so tender they literally melted in our mouths.
Our special dish was the traditional cheese pie with honey. I’m usually not a fan of savory and sweet combinations, but this one completely won me over. The balance of flavors was just perfect, and we ended up having the pies with every meal while we were there.
On top of the amazing food, the atmosphere and the view made the experience even more memorable. It felt like visiting family who cooked for you with so much care and warmth. Thank you so much for the amazing times and the tea. We would definitely...
Read moreTaverna Dictamus is an absolute must visit location if you're visiting the lovely town of Psichro and the Cave of Diktaion Andron. We arrived just when the gracious hostess and owner was opening for the day, and she made us feel welcome and right at home. She offered us the most fresh and delicious food we have had while in Greece. Locally made sheep's milk yogurt with honey made by the family, amazing light cheese filled pastry pies covered in honey, rich buttery omelets, and a sheep's milk desert. My kids said the fresh squeezed orange juice was they best they'd ever had, and I agree. My coffee was great too, and the service was quick, friendly, and helpful. The views of the plateau were stunning. The owner even gave is recommendations for a pottery shop to visit in the town and gave us tips for hiking up to the cave and taught us about the local plants used for tea. Highlight...
