One of the all time classic tavernas in the greater Rethymno area, a heaven for meat lovers.
Location: Near the village of Atsipopoulo (Violin Charaki area), 3,5 km to the southwest of the city of Rethymno. You have to go there by car. There is designated parking with plenty of space.
Ambience, comfort, decor: The restaurant has an indoor and an outdoor seating area. A part of the latter also acts as a protected terrace in winter months. The indoor area has a rustic ambience, has a fireplace and is dark. The outdoor area is under trees and is pleasant in summer. Both seating areas are comfortable. The place is children friendly and features a children toilet, which is a rarity.
Food, quality, quantity: The food is based on Cretan meat specialities of outstanding quality. Starter highlights are the barbecued lamb brains, fried lamb testicles, lamb intestines filled with splene and fried liver. Main course highlights are the lamb chops (some of the best on Crete) and the succulent veal steak. Pork steaks are also great. Cretan style hamburgers are average. One should also try the wild greens (if available) and the excellent Condition dakos (hard bread made of wheat or barley). Last but not least, the homemade potatoes chips are a must. The portions are huge bit beware that they do not come with accompaniments to the meat. So one should order fries and salads as extras.
Treats at no extra charge: Desert and raki. Desert is usually Greek loukoumi and kormos.
Service: The service is generally good and friendly. It can get slow or very slow when the restaurant is crowded.

Simple, family fun, with a long history in the city of Rethymno this restaurant was recommend by a local friend.
The place feels outdated, having all sorts of old ornaments, memorabilia and a kids playground within the premise BUT it was the most honest tavern I have been on Crete, and I’ve been to a lot!
This is the ultimate grill master experience on Crete. They have all sorts of meats and cuts to choose from some of which you will find in no other place on the island. We tried lamb brain, lamb chops, beef steak and seftalies which were all grilled to perfection and tot he right doneness.
We also order the extra crispy friend fries that this place is notorious for.
We paid 70€ and took a parcel to go as well since the portions were hearty.

Everything we ate was delicious, and the service was fantastic. Personal highlights include the dolmades but instead stuffed into courgette flowers, and the grilled lambs brain.
