Kexagias — Restaurant in Municipality of Rethymnon

First time on holiday in Crete. We found that the meals were poor in quality. Three of us ordered a pork stew meal and when it came there were a few lumps of very dry meat on the bones, one of us didn’t have much meat on the bone at all. Served with chips - which didn’t overall look very appealing. My husband ordered ‘pork chops’ but they were very dry and no flavour. I had the mousaka which I thought was nice but hardly any meat in it, just a lot of courgette. To top it off - three of us ordered mojitos and they were €8 each - expecting a tall glass but when it came they were all half the size and extremely strong in flavour. Could only taste the rum and nothing else. Very bitter. The service was good but they need to really work on the quality of food. Their menus were very confusing to go by and what was written on there wasn’t what actually arrived...

We had our holiday at the end of August, 2023 and we came to eat at this restaurant daily, because it was the best within walking distance from our accommodation. Needless to say the food was amazing, everything that we ordered was delicious and we enjoyed every meal! My husband wanted to eat a different fish on one occasion (they had sea bream daily, grilled and de-boned when served) and they bought one (a massive red sea bream) especially for him from the fish market and served it to us. We also celebrated our daughter's birthday on one of the evenings and she received a small cake, from the house. Great people, a family business, that is worth...

Tasty food, excellent service, reasonable prices, cozy atmosphere... there are lots of reasons to drop in if you are somewhere near.

And 2 year later, Kexagias is even better than it was. We usually do not return to places we visited before, but this year we returned on Crete, and catched a bus to dine at Kexagias again. I do admit I was a bit afraid of disappointment, but this beautiful taverna is as good as it was, if not even better.
